In the old days, men were men and women were women, but this is no longer true. Today we have multiple choices, and we need new concepts if we are to mate and marry and stay married. With poor role modeling by divorced parents, and conflicting media images of maleness and femaleness, men and women are creating a mixture of old traditions and new-age values to the confusion of everyone. Western culture has traditionally cast men as the protectors, leaders, and predominant doers. Men have traditionally proposed to women, have conferred status upon women, and have been the security providers. Women, on the other hand, have been the domesticators, the followers, the recipients-they have made themselves available to the life plans of men and have been responsive to male needs. Maleness, in this scheme, is the pragmatic, functional way in which we handle work and initiate action. It is verbal, centered in the left lobe of the brain. Femaleness is the passive, the receptive, the emotional centered in the right lobe of the brain; it can be represented as nonverbal energy. Its function in traditional terms is to serve as an outlet for emotion and a moral brake; it can be seen as the stable center that allows a relationship to develop and be maintained.

Although both male and female elements are vital to the makeup of both men and women, for a relationship to be healthy and successful, they must be reconciled and be complementary. In other words, there can only be one male and one female in every relationship.

Still married and loving it!

My husband and I were on the verge of divorce a year ago, and now we can't get enough of each other.. all because of this book! The title is misleading because it's not a book for the wife.. the husband needs to read it as well for this to work. I recommend it to everyone struggling with marital roles and the confusion and frustration that comes with it. It's smart and realistic and it works! Skip the sexist comments - they aren't important to the theories - and learn from the rest.

A fun read -- and shocking advice that actually works!

I have read many books on communication, and many books on how to be even happier in interpersonal relationships, and I can honestly say that Staying Married... is the best, and most helpful, one I have ever read. Don't expect sweet-sounding advice that doesn't really work -- this book gives you the real deal. The section entitled "How To Get What You Want From Your Man Without Asking" is amazing. After reading it, I applied the principles... and they worked!

Great Book---Really!!!

Whoever is reading these reviews will see some negative reviews. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! This book has some VERY good "insights" into how male/female relations work. Thus you will learn "how to adjust" any relationship so that there will be greater harmony and compatibility in your relationship and/or marriage. Please read it with an open mind and with the idea that roles can be changed and "alternated"---the male/female "roles" are not "made in cement"----they can be changed, with mutual consent, depending on day to day circumstances. Please read with an open mind. You will help yourself and your marriage if you do. Email boland7214@aol.co

Very New (2011) Into to Modern France

If someone were to ask me to write a summary of modern France that was only about 140 moderate-to-small sized pages, I'm not sure how I would handle the task. I've spent enough time in France and read enough books about the country and its history that I would probably spend as much time just trying to select topics as I would actually writing. The history of France itself is an incredibly detailed and interesting one, but how would I describe modern France itself in such a short space? I fear I would not be able to, easily becoming caught up in all the topics, themes, currents, events, and movements that have added up to making France what it is today.

So, when I saw a new book that purports to summarize Modern France in such a format, I was a tiny bit skeptical. Interested, but skeptical. The advantage of short, summarized works, of course, is that the author does the hard work of slicing out, selecting, and summarizing from vast swaths of source material to develop something that is easily digestible. The drawback, also of course, is that such summaries rarely can convey "essence" without throwing away all the details that are essential components of that very essence." But, to my delight, Vanessa Schwartz has done a very good job with this challenging task in her new book, which is part of Oxford's already truly outstanding "Very Short Introduction" series.

Schwartz's book, though a delight for anyone interested in France, is also very well suited for those new to the topic and wishing to be introduced to this fascinating country. The book provides an introductory framework that uses the French Revolution as both its starting point and an orienting guidepost for all things Franco-Modern, and then quickly (and really quickly, due to the length constraints) hits on the high points of the modern state. We read of movements (the communards, consumerism, etc.), the role of the French language in France and around the world, as well as modern realities (the TGV, the Concord jet, tourism, etc.) as part of this story. And although there is little time to dwell on any of these things, Schwartz has done a great job of weaving much divergent, yet nevertheless, intertwined content into a highly readable narrative that is accessible to nearly anyone. It's as enjoyable to read as it is impressive for its coverage.

I could easily see this book used as a supplemental text for someone studying French and wishing to get a broader understanding of France today. It could also be used by someone planning their first trip to France, and wanting to understand the country just a bit more before the trip (yet it must be said that France is a country that probably needs to be understood from the inside out, as much as the outside in). But it can also be used by anyone with an interest in France and who just wishes to see a new author cut a curve of prose through this fascinating country. The book's readability, pocketability, and content coverage make it not only an excellent addition to the wonderful Oxford series of "A Very Short Introduction", but as a work in its own right. Five stars.

Very short - and quite brilliant

Vanessa Schwartz has written a wonderful book about the glories of Paris, of French art and French film, and about the French obsession with their language. The chapter on the French Revoution, which was the beginning of everything, is especially strong -- and her treatment of France's conflicts and contradictions today is sober and smart. It's a great example of how a "very short" book can also be (in the words of Patrice Higgonet) "quite brilliant."

Must Read for Art Lovers

If you are at all interested in the history of art, modern art, this is the book to read. Utterly fascinating, but what is really great are the full page color reprints of the art. I was introduced to artists I had never heard of, and fell in love with some, particularly Picabbia. Over 30 essays by different writers, each fairly short and easy to understand by the lay person. Except perhaps for the essays on film. I did have a hard time with those. Unfortunately, and my only quibble with this book, is that there is no reference at all as to who these people are, what their credentials might be. I would have liked to know. That said, it is a simply marvelous art book, one to own and refer to again and again.

I actually went to MOMA on February 13th, but, alas, they had little on display of these artists, except for one room. Only one Picabbia, and that one not the best. Perhaps because three whole rooms were closed for work. A fair representation of Robert Delauney, however. Especially his "Windows".

I have slowly come to appreciate Modern Art, and this book reinforced my understanding of it. I was very sorry to have finished it.

If you have to use Hillman's casebook, you're going to NEED this book.

To my surprise, this book made infinitely more sense than Hillman's "Contract and Related Obligation." I initially passed on it because I thought it would be equally terrible, but I was wrong and I wish I had bought this at the beginning of the year. This covers most of the cases with helpful explanations of the topics. Maybe it was more of a problem with the professor we had, but I wouldn't have survived contracts without this book. It's not long, but it's clear and concise. This was the best "hornbook" I used. If your professor is using Hillman's text, just go ahead and buy this.

This book is fantastic! Explains everything really well. Got this for first year law school and I would keep this to study/review for the bar instead of the textbook. I wish I bought it sooner to read along with the text instead of the review for finals.

About the Author

Elaine Leeder is Professor of Sociology and Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Sonoma State University. She holds an MSW from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work of Yeshiva University, a Masters of Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Cornell University. From 1977 to 2001, she taught in the sociology department at Ithaca College and coordinated the social work minor. She teaches courses on social change, family violence and the treatment and prevention of family violence and social policy. She has written books and articles on radical women's history, treatment of child abuse perpetrators, domestic violence, and spirituality.

This is an awesome book for Sociology 105!

I am taking Sociology 105 in college, and I had to buy this book for that class. I like this book pretty much. It is pretty easy to understand the concepts the book adresses (not because of the simplicity of its language use, but because of its great ways of explanations). I also like many of the good ideas in there. When one reads this book, however, he/she needs to learn to look at it in an objective way (basing your judgments on facts rather than opinion) and look at the facts described in this book as thing that are really out there (even though you may not like them). That's just how the world is! And after reading this book, you can reason with yourself if your way thinking is still a good one... (?)

About the Author
After a degree in Latin American Studies Sarah Cameron has been travelling and writing on the Americas ever since, both as an economist and as an author for Footprint Handbooks. Initially moonlighting for the South American Handbook while working for a British bank, in 1990 she parted company with the world of finance and has been contributing to the expansion of Footprint titles ever since. Sarah still keeps her hand in with South America, collaborating with Ben Box on the South American Handbook, the Peru Handbook and Cuzco & the Inca Heartlands, but concentrates mainly on the Caribbean. She is the author of all 17 editions of Footprint Caribbean Islands, as well as individual island titles such as the Cuba Handbook, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua & the Leeward Islands. This was a fine guidebook, but we did not visit many of the sites. What the author failed to mention is that #1: as a white American, one does not feel comfortable driving one's rental car around the island. We have driven rental cars in many countries and never did we feel unwelcome. People either glared at us or harrassed us to hire them. The tourists who seemed to be having a good time hired guides to take them around. #2: the roads were so twisty that it takes a long time to get from place to place. So that was also a deterrent to touring around. Note that we were on the east central part of the island. The residents were quite friendly and helpful at the hotels, restaurants, etc., just not when they were on the streets or on their porches. We would not return because of this. The island is beautiful.

The truth shall make you free!

First let me say: this book will open your eyes to things which you probably do not yet understand. If you take on this study with seriousness, it will radically alter your walk with the Lord. It will call you to account. Cause you to ask yourself tough questions. And- it will cut through all the distractions- to take you straight to the heart of everything that matters. Jehovah God. Jesus Christ.

The DVDs are great but pricey. If you can't afford them, then just get this workbook- and pull out your Bible. Get down on your knees. Prepare to be overwhelmed. Because - if you take this study seriously- and if you pair it with prayer- then you will come face to face with the One True God. Only the God of Scripture Can truly bring a man to worship. Only He is worthy and able to do this.
You will come to understand that, unknowingly, most of us have exalted a god of our own imagining. We pick and choose from among His attributes - to suit ourselves (emphasizing the parts of Scripture that express Gods love, mercy, grace- but hmmm.. glancing over those uncomfortable aspects of His character which would hold us accountable to Him.. You know....all that stuff about judgement and repentance and justice....)
What we end up with, is an amputated and castrated version- a golden calf of our own making. Many of us do not even realize- that we do NOT yet know the God of the Bible. The only God.
If you want to know Him, and you are willing to let Him be your King- mighty and holy and righteous- as He is- then this study will help you find Him.
He is there, waiting ....which of you will seek Him out?

excellent study

I thought I knew G-d after 50 years of studing and reading the bible. I was wrong. This study has put me into a different direction in my relationship with my Lord. It is all about Him and what He can do using me. It is not about me and what I can do.

The BEST and HARDEST study of my life {a simple testimony}

Every week of this study begins with the question: "Are you willing to adjust your life to whatever God reveals of Himself in the coming days?" I was so broken and so hungry for more of Jesus that my answer came in an unashamed cry of "Yes!" each new week. I would work on 5 days of studies and then watch the DVDs (sold separately) with a small group of people. After the 1st DVD, I was completely speechless - how have I missed THIS kind of Christianity all these years! I loved how everything was based on the Bible and illustrated by great movements of God in history. Don't get me wrong, this study was one of the hardest things I've had to do, it brought death to my flesh in many ways, or rather I should say God's grace brought death to my flesh through this study of His Word. I was brought low in doing this study and I learned that know God you must be humbled and broken. I thought I knew so much, but now I know the more you think you know, the further away from God you are.

The study gets better and better every week. Just when I thought I couldn't get any deeper, further it would go. Oh how I learned to love the Word of God! I am so thankful for this study, there are not words. I'm not even sure what study I could follow this up with, so I've been reading scripture and few oldies that had Christianity in a way our modern churches can only dream about.

In my opinion, this study rivals the best you've ever done, especially if you are a modern lay person. But you must be humble and wholly surrendered to the Lord if you desire to draw nearer and nearer still to the only "Uncreated One" who "laid aside His crown to bring salvation." Hallelujah forever and ever!
