An Excellent Quick-Read For This Clerkship

As an owner of all the Recall Series texts, I found this less-popular text to be one that I used more often than many of the others in this series. It is small and an easy review in one weekend. It summarizes the personality disorders in a few pages, and addresses the other Axis I disorders succinctly. This is a great resource for review the weekend before your psychiatry clerkship begins. It is not a sole resource for the exam, and one downfall is that it is not current with a recent edition. Still, a clutch review of the abstract world of psychiatry.

...I am very glad that I read [this] as I rather enjoyed it and found it very useful from a National Health Service (NHS) dispensing perspective and as a manager of an NHS audiology service. The clue is in the title- this book is about selling hearing aids- very much in a quality way. It takes you through the journey from first contact with the patient, gathering patient history and understanding their difficulties, conducting assessment, discussing the results and closing the sale. This book is packed with resources and references current and past research…Much use is made of the 'Bright Ideas' sections in the book which are tips on practice of concise summaries of the text. This helps break up what could have been a dry text but isn't. In fact, this book manages to perform a neat trick, in that it is far from simplistic in content but easy to read. It holds the attention to the end...I would recommend this book for any professional involved in the hearing aid dispensing process, especially those embarking on a career. About the Author
Brian Taylor, Au.D. is currently the Director of Practice Development & Clinical Affairs for Unitron. He is responsible for all best practice initiatives and customer loyalty programs for Unitron in the United States. Over the past 20 years he has dispensed hearing aids in both retail and medical settings, including Rockford Clinic and Sonus. Prior to his current position, he was the Director of Professional Development for Amplifon and served as their Global Training Manager in Milan, Italy.

Dr. Taylor has written and lectured extensively on several topics, including practice management and evidence-based hearing aid selection and fitting approaches. Brian holds an Au.D. from Central Michigan University and a master's degree in Audiology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He currently resides in Minneapolis.

About the Author

Robert V. Kail is Distinguished Professor of Psychological Sciences at Purdue University. His undergraduate degree is from Ohio Wesleyan University, and his Ph.D. is from the University of Michigan. Kail is editor of Child Development Perspectives and the editor emeritus of Psychological Science. He received the McCandless Young Scientist Award from the American Psychological Association, was named the Distinguished Sesquicentennial Alumnus in Psychology by Ohio Wesleyan University, and is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. He has also written Scientific Writing for Psychology: Lessons in Clarity and Style. His research focuses on cognitive development during childhood and adolescence. Children and Their Development

This fascinating book provides a current, thougth-provoking and deeply informative insight into the minds of childdren and how they develop in out modern-day society. I plan to use it in my curicculum this spring at my department of teaching, along with Genie:A Scientific Tragedy. The book is quite interesting, and it was a pleasure to read-I have already started making plans to contact the author to show my approval.

One of the best textbooks I've had in years!

As a senior in my last semester of undergrad degree, I've read my share of textbooks (and I'm one of those bizarre students who actually READS them, not just skims parts occasionally), and this one has been a joy to my jaded eyes! I know it's petty, but I like a textbook to have a bit of color; it just helps keep you awake, in my opinion. This book has lots of full color pictures as well as different font colors for headings etc. But one of my favorite features, is that it comes "pre-highlighted": important vocab is in blue, bold, and italics with its definition in black bold, and important concepts are put in the margin in a larger font in blue. It's also VERY well organized. Each chapter is divided into modules, and each module is organized by heading systems that make it really easy to find what you want again if you need to go back. Plus, there are little helps like thought questions and story vignettes; and each chapter ends with a summary and some practice questions, as well as a mini-index for page numbers for key terms from that chapter in particular.

More important than formatting (which is important in my opinion), the writing is clear and easy to follow, even fun at times. The writer uses a very casual, first-person style, which makes the whole experience more down-to-earth and accessible. True, I imagine there are more in-depth textbooks on this subject out there, but if you're just taking a survey/intro course like I am (one of my last electives, hoorah!), this is the perfect amount of depth. Enough to teach you a lot, but without being overly technical or bogged with excessive detail. If I wanted to go into extreme detail, I could have majored in this; to just learn the basics, this is perfect! I actually used this textbook as a "treat" in my studying repertoire, saving it for last after I covered my more tedious textbooks. I knew I could read this even if I was tired and still have good comprehension and attention levels, and I actually have really enjoyed the material. I even found myself reading portions that weren't assigned for my class, just because I found it interesting!

Decent textbook

Initially I was most impressed with my purchase because it was listed in "good" condition but was in fact in excellent condition. I was very pleased with the deal I got for this required textbook. That said, I have quite enjoyed using this text to learn more about a topic I find very interesting, as well. My one complaint, though, is that Kail sometimes goes above and beyond the concept of an example. Perhaps it is my own reading style or comprehension level, but when I need to read two chapters in short order, I find it unfortunate that I spend much of my time skimming through or skipping over lengthy analogies. Kail makes a lot of excellent points and can distill some big concepts into digestible portions, but I think a lot of the chapters could use some streamlining. Conversely, I also think there are intriguing subjects and tidbits I would have enjoyed further reading on.
But it's a textbook. It isn't perfect, but at least the majority of it is easily understood.

This is a great Harry Potter quiz book. It's the first one I've ordered after reading many reviews. Some of the questions are super hard and some of them are easy. We had fun passing it around and using it like a trivia game.

Remember when we thought cell phone damage was just a crazy rumor? Now that Time, CQ, and other mainstream media have jumped on the bandwagon, it's a good thing to know that this author was talking about this all along, for years! This book is written in a way that is easy to understand. That doesn't mean that we'll like all it warns us about, but the author makes sure to give us hope, as well as tools to process the electronic and atmospheric challenges against our attention-span, our focus, and our emotional health. A must-read for everyone who strives to have a happier, more productive, more balanced lifestyle.
