About the Author

Dr. James M. Rubenstein received his B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1970, M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1971, and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. He is Professor of Geography at Miami University, where he teaches urban and human geography.

Dr. Rubenstein also conducts research in the automotive industry and has published three books on the subject–The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis (Routledge); Making and Selling Cars: Innovation and Change in the U.S. Auto Industry (The Johns Hopkins University Press); and Who Really Made Your Car? Restructuring and Geographic Change in the Auto Industry (W.E. Upjohn Institute, with Thomas Klier).

Dr. Rubenstein is also the author of the bestselling Contemporary Human Geography, as well as Introduction to Contemporary Geography. He also writes a weekly column about local food for the Oxford Press. Winston, a lab-husky mix with one brown eye and one blue eye, takes Dr. Rubenstein for long walks in the woods every day.

I absolutely hated this class. First "B" I've made in a while. The online content was very difficult for this colorblind student. So many graphs, etc that was color coded. Otherwise the book itself is very well written and I did learn a lot. Obviously people don't buy these books for enjoyment but for a degree requirement. Have fun with that.

About the Author

WAYNE WOLF is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Associated Faculty in the Department of Computer Science at Princeton University. His research interests include embedded computing, multimedia systems, VLSI and computer-aided design. He is the author of Computers as Components: Principles of Embedded Computer System Design and Modern VLSI Design, Third Edition. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and ACM, and an IEEE Computer Society Golden Core member. In 2003, he earned the ASEE/EED and HP Frederick E. Terman Award.

This book is an experiment. Shortly after completing the third edition of ModernVLSI Design, I came to realize that an increasing number of digital designs that usedto be built in custom silicon are now implemented in field programmable gate arrays(FPGAs). While traditional VLSI system design won't go away any time soon, anincreasing number of designers will work with FPGAs and many of them will neverdesign a custom chip.

However, designers of large FPGA-based systems really do need to understand thefundamentals of VLSI in order to make best use of their FPGAs. While it is true thatmany system designers simply treat the FPGA as a black box, that approach makesthe system designer miss many opportunities to optimize the design to fit within theFPGA. The architecture of FPGAs is largely determined by VLSI constraints: logicelement structures, programmable interconnect structures, interconnection networks,configuration, pinout, etc. Understanding how the characteristics of VLSI devicesinfluence the design of FPGA fabrics helps the designer better understand how to takeadvantage of the FPGA's best characteristics and to minimize the influence of itslimitations.

Consider, for example, the interconnection networks in FPGAs. Most modern FPGAarchitectures provide designers with several different types of wires: local, generalpurpose,and global. Why do all these different types of connections exist? Becausewires become harder to drive as they grow in length; the extra circuitry required todrive long wires makes them more expensive. Understanding how these differenttypes of interconnect work helps a designer decide whether a particular logicconnection requires one of the more expensive types of wires.

Today's FPGAs are truly amazing. High-end FPGAs can hold several million gates.Several FPGAs incorporate one or more CPUs on-chip to provide a completeembedded computing platform. Many of the techniques for designing such largesystems are the same whether they are built using FPGAs or custom silicon. This isparticularly true when we want to make best use of the silicon characteristics of VLSIstructures.

As a result of these advances in VLSI systems, I decided to use Modern VLSI Designas a starting point for a new book on FPGA-based system design. Readers of ModernVLSI Design will recognize material from most of the chapters in that book. I haveextracted material on VLSI characteristics, circuits, combinational and sequentiallogic design, and system architectures. However, I have also added quite a bit of newmaterial, some of which is specific to FPGAs and some of which is simply a new (andI hope better) look at digital system design.

One of my major goals in writing this book was to provide a useful text for bothdesigners interested in VLSI and those who simply want to use FPGAs to build bigsystems. Chapter 2 of this book is devoted to a review of VLSI: fabrication, circuits,interconnect characteristics, etc. Throughout the rest of the book, I have tried to breakout most details of VLSI design into separate sections that can be skipped by thereader who is not interested in VLSI. However, those who want to understand moreabout the design of FPGAs as VLSI devices can read this material at their leisure.Chapter 3 is devoted to a survey of FPGA fabrics--the basic programmable structuresof FPGAs. The commercial offerings of companies change all the time, so thischapter is not meant to be a replacement for a data book. Its goal is to introduce somebasic concepts in FPGAs and to compare different approaches to solving the basicproblems in programmable logic. What to do with these FPGA structures is thesubject of the rest of the book.

Chapters 4 and 5 go into detail about combinational and sequential logic design,respectively. They describe methods for the specification and optimization of digitallogic to meet the major goals in most design efforts: size, speed, and powerconsumption. We introduce both Verilog and VHDL in this book. While this book isnot intended as a definitive reference on either language, hardware descriptionlanguages are the medium of choice today for designing digital systems. A basicunderstanding of these languages, as well as of the fundamentals of hardwaredescription languages, is essential to success in digital system design. We also studythe tools for optimizing logic and sequential machine designs in order to understandhow to best make use of logic and physical synthesis.

Chapter 6 looks at the structure of large digital systems. This chapter introducesregister-transfer design as a methodology for structuring digital designs. It uses asimple DSP as a design example. This DSP is not intended as a state-of-the-art CPUdesign, but it does allow us to consider a large number of different design problems ina single example.

Chapter 7 caps off the book by studying large-scale systems built with FPGAs.Platform FPGAs that include CPUs and FPGA fabrics allow designers to mixhardware and software on a single chip to solve difficult design problems. Multi-FPGA systems can be used to implement very large designs; a single multi-FPGAsystem can be programmed to implement many different logic designs.So what will happen to ASIC design? I don't think it will go away--people will stillneed the high density and high performance that only custom silicon provides. But Ithink that FPGAs will become one of the major modes of implementation for digitalsystems.

Xilinx has graciously allowed us to include CDs that contain the Xililnx StudentEdition (XSE) tools. The examples in this book were prepared with these tools andyou can follow along with the examples using the tools. You can also use them tocreate your own examples. Beginner book

A entry level book, with too much time spent on VLSI issues, with a lot of large screenshoots & large pictures just to fill in the space.

The mentioned "A start-to-finish DSP case study addressing a wide range of design problems" which made me buy the book is a joke. It's hardly a advanceed DSP unit, more a Harward architecture CPU which implements 5 or 6 instructions and no advanced functionality and design issues which might arise in a complex design.

You can find much better synthethiable cores free on internet to learn from them. Save your money if you are anything but a beginer in FPGA.

I agree with the other negative reviews. This book is a complete waste of money. It only covers the basics--and not very well. The chapter on FPGA fabrics had me scratching my head. I was able to find much better (and much less expensive) resources online. Trust me, there's no topic this book covers that you can't find for free on the Internet. Don't waste your money. Just because someone's from Princeton doesn't mean they know how to write a book.

Not for beginners

I was really disappointed with this book. It does not explain enough FPGA programming to get started, and spends much time covering topics that are probably of interest to people who already know how to use an FPGA and want to use it better.However, as far as I can tell about this, it seems to be an excellent complement to an introduction to FPGAs design. The inner workings of the system are explained in depth and very clearly.

The information contained herein will assist in the planning and design of shelters that may be constructed outside or within dwellings or public buildings. These safe rooms will protect occupants from a variety of hazards, including debris impact, accidental or intentional explosive detonation, and the accidental or intentional release of a toxic substance into the air. Safe rooms may also be designed to protect individuals from assaults and attempted kidnapping, which requires design features to resist forced entry and ballistic impact. This covers a range of protective options, from low-cost expedient protection (what is commonly referred to as sheltering-in-place) to safe rooms ventilated and pressurized with air purified by ultra-high-efficiency filters. These safe rooms protect against toxic gases, vapors, and aerosols (finely divided solid or liquid particles). This guidance focuses on safe rooms as standby systems, ones that do not provide protection on a continuous basis. To employ a standby system requires warning based on knowledge that a hazardous condition exists or is imminent. Protection is initiated as a result of warnings from civil authorities about a release of hazardous materials, visible or audible indications of a release (e.g., explosion or fire), the odor of a chemical agent, or observed symptoms of exposure in people. Although there are automatic detectors for chemical agents, such detectors are expensive and limited in the number of agents that can be reliably detected. Furthermore, at this point in time, these detectors take too long to identify the agent to be useful in making decisions in response to an attack. Similarly, an explosive vehicle or suicide bomber attack rarely provides advance warning; therefore, the shelter is most likely to be used after the fact to protect occupants until it is safe to evacuate the building. Two different types of shelters may be considered for emergency use, standalone shelters and internal shelters. A standalone shelter is a separate building (i.e., not within or attached to any other building) that is designed and constructed to withstand the range of natural and manmade hazards. An internal shelter is a specially designed and constructed room or area within or attached to a larger building that is structurally independent of the larger building and is able to withstand the range of natural and manmade hazards. Both standalone and internal shelters are intended to provide emergency refuge for occupants of commercial office buildings, school buildings, hospitals, apartment buildings, and private homes from the hazards resulting from a wide variety of extreme events. The shelters may be used during natural disasters following the warning that an explosive device may be activated, the discovery of an explosive device, or until safe evacuation is established following the detonation of an explosive device or the release of a toxic substance via an intentional aerosol attack or an industrial accident. Standalone community shelters may be constructed in neighborhoods where existing homes lack shelters. Community shelters may be intended for use by the occupants of buildings they are constructed within or near, or they may be intended for use by the residents of surrounding or nearby neighborhoods or designated areas.

Unique and extremely hot!

Unique novel with a touch of Game of Thrones. The story is beautifully narrated and we get to know the perspectives of some of the different characters. I really enjoyed getting to know and to understand them better after finding about their personal lives and what lead them to the actual circumstances. The sex scenes are really hot and even if, sometimes, I don't agree with some of the acts, they are reasonable under those circumstances and in that society.

I really loved how the author describes the places where the story takes place and the two cultures and societies involved. For some hours she brought me back to the Game of Thrones books, but with romance and erotic scenes ;-)

The only thing I didn't appreciate was the cliffhanger. Lately it seems that most of novels I am reading have a cliffhanger and it is difficult to keep up with all the publication dates and all the books coming up. It's very time consuming and frustrating for the readers and I'm positive that more than one series I really enjoyed I'll miss checking if a new instalment was published and, consequently, totally forget about it. However, I hope Ms. Wolfe publishes a new book soon so I don't forget her because I cannot wait for her next book!!

A Fantasy Tale worth the Telling

In this alternate world, the dwellers of Arcadia are protected from the Dark beings by the Wildlanders, a fiercely honorable race that lives outside the walls of Arcadia. The women of Arcadia are kept "pure" by preventing them from enjoying pleasures. The women must be thin, blond and prim to be considered good wife material. There is a long standing agreement between their Commissioner and the elders of the Wildlanders that the latter will protect the city dwellers in exchange for their unwanted women. Ava is not of the desired norm and has always felt different, but one day at the market she meets one of the Wildlanders and not long afterwards she finds herself being a tribute bride not just to that very warrior, but to his three classmates as well.
Ava has a hard time adjusting to their ways, but I have to say, the way the Wildlander's world is described I would pick it over Arcadia any day. They play hard and are fiercely loyal to their clan and family. I came away realising that they had far more admirable traits than the city dwellers.
The story contains explicit sex with Ava and her four mates as well as some m/m between two of her mates. A theme throughout is doing the right thing for the good of the whole and the value of honor.
While the Wildlanders certainly have fierce warriors, they are ruled by the elder women, unlike the city dwellers that place little value on women in general.

Kath Woodward is Professor of Sociology at the Open University. I say not Wicca and that's a good thing. The New Age has deluted
everything worth knowing about. Just look what has happened to
Yoga! This Spellbook got in under the Fluffy-Bunny Radar and sincere spellcasters should celebrate. I treasure my copy.

Wiccans Beware �Advisory Some Black Magic Included.�

Do not let the cover fool you on this Book.. It shows all the basic tools of Wicca. This is not a book really for Wiccans, as it does get on the Dark side. I am one who loves all of Tarostars books, well the two that I have anyway. This book is excellent for those in Hoodoo, Voodoo, Bruejria, Curanderia and Santeria.
The way it is written and the Spells in the back remind me of the old time spells, used in Latin America. Some Cursing Spells, with a little Hexing and Protection. The oil section, is good. I was not to crazy about the floor washes, as this is not the way I personally do them. Actually not even close. But the rest of the book is a great little read. I recommend this book to all those Brujos, who do not fear Karma, like Christians Fear the Devil. I would also put a sticker on this Book. "Advisory Some Black Magic Included."
