Amazing Photo-realistic Artwork

This is a book of vibrant new aviation art from the American Society of Aviation Artists. There are 112 paintings by 32 artists mostly done from 1975-1990. Each is a full page in brilliant color on heavy stock. The paintings are arranged chronologically by subject matter from World War I to the Space Shuttle. Here you will find most of history's famous aircraft as well as some of the most rare and unusual.The style of these paintings is photo-realistic and highly detailed. Each is historically accurate and the complete story behind the painting is given on the opposite page. Information on the artists is also included. This is a great book for the student of aviation history as well as the art fan. The plates would look great framed if you could bear to remove them from the book.

But times, and technology, are different, and now almost anything can be measured. To the recurring refrain of phrases such as “Our data show,” the authors subject the beautiful game to a gimlet-eyed accounting, determining which cherished beliefs are true and which are wishful thinking. And what do the data show? That luck plays more of a factor than most managers like to admit—but that managers are more important than many think. That regional differences in playing style are overstated. That weak players are actually more influential than talented stars. And that’s just for starters. Coaches should read this closely, though it may prove dispiriting for fans. After all, arguing about ambiguities is half the fun. Data & Soccer

I liked both this book and Soccernomics, but I thought this one actually focused better on the game and the impact of data. Soccernomics spent more time than I would have like discusses fans of soccer.

Could be better, not as good as Soccernomics

The authors clearly love the game, and love analytics, but they haven't written a great book. I found myself nitpicking their arguments more than agreeing with them, starting with the "Why everything you know about soccer is wrong" subtitle, which they quickly contradict in the introduction with the statement "We will, we expect, challenge some of your assumptions, but we will doubtless support others."

Among the many other contradictory elements are the discussions of the Castrol Player Index which they use to argue for a high correlation between the quality of players within any team: "Great players play with other great players." This is followed four pages later by the statement "...Messi's score arises from his inclusion in the Barcelona subsystem...", suggesting that the Castrol rankings are dependent on the quality of the team and not an independent measure of a player's performance. If team quality influences the ranking, how believable is the initial conclusion about correlation between? In fact, it's still believable, because it matches the many things we know about soccer that isn't wrong.

Finally, I found the Americanization of this edition for sale in the US to be inconsistent and distracting. The word "football" has been excised, even in quotations: "As Ronay write: 'In the early 1990s, [soccer] entered a new era.'" On the other hand they make frequent reference to the book "Why England Loses", which was sold in the US (probably everywhere outside the UK) under the title "Soccernomics".

There are certainly interesting analyses and new ideas here, but my recommendation is to read Soccernomics instead.

More Pluses than Minuses in "The Numbers"

On the plus side: "The Numbers Game," to paraphrase Mark Twain, makes a lot of good hamburgers out of sacred cows. Anderson and Sally provide us with much food for thought regarding assumptions about soccer that we may never have questioned before. One great example is the strong evidence they provide that the game's outcome is about half determined by luck. They go a little too far when they say this means soccer is a "coin-toss game," but still, it is a revelation to realize that so much is out of the hands (or off the feet) of the players and coaches. It makes you wonder how much else in sports--and in life--is determined by chance. There's also a connection here to much later in the book, where the authors address the issue of "regression to the mean." Again Anderson and Sally provide us with examples that question how much control coaches and players really have over the game they are trying to influence. It was astounding to learn that in many cases, whether you replace a manager or not can be irrelevant--a team can "regress to the mean" and start improving their play just as much by keeping the manager as by firing him. (The same goes for whether the manager screams at them for losing or calmly explains how they can play better--though the latter, they suggest, is better for morale.) One final point I thought was very important was the evidence the authors provide that money alone does not rule soccer--they prove that there are "plenty of clubs [...] that outperform their salary tab in any given season." This is akin to the argument made about Billy Beane and the Oakland A's in "Moneyball." It's heartening to know that the underdog can still win, any given Sunday, with the appropriate strategy and a bit of luck.

On the minus side: One thing I found a little disappointing about the book was that it didn't really have one or two main heroes to root for like Billy Beane or Bill James in "Moneyball"--in fact the book probably mentioned those two sabermetricians almost as much as any other single soccer statistician, manager or player. I think it would've made the book's narrative more compelling overall if the authors had spent more time getting to know say, Tony Pulis of Stoke, Arrigo Sacchi of AC Milan or less famously, Jimmy Davies of Waterloo Dock AFC. All three men were mentioned as fascinating examples of managerial insight, but were only given a few pages to shine. I suppose we'll have to settle for the pioneering role of Wing Commander Charles Reep for now...

Got my 6 yr old playing with no help

She's playing with both hands and proud of it...and I didn't have to teach her a thing. I started her with book 1 which she was bored of in a week, so I bought the next two books, and she proudly skipped straight to this one.

Fantastic for young kids

Our 5 & 7 year olds LOVE these!
We weren't quite ready to enroll 2 kids in piano lessons, until we had a better idea of their interest level. And just 30 days in, they're both playing multiple tunes with proper fingering. Our 7 year old is now playing pieces requiring both hands.
These really are excellent!
And if your stickers come off, you can reorder for a pre-paid envelope and $1/set. We ordered 5 just to have, for when our originals wear.

Accepting yourself or not can affect you in many ways.

Bree and her friends have escaped the terrible Egrian King, but at what cost? Bree, Tregle, and Aleta find allies in the secret society of the underground that help them escape the city. But along the way they come across new struggles and battles, some of which are mental along with the physical of traveling. Bree needs to accept who she is, but it's hard with the ghosts haunting her every step and missing her Da. Caden faces his father and learns that being his son isn't going to help this time. The battle is on to get to Nereidium and raise an army to stop the Egrian King from using his weapon of unyielding fire against all to get what he wants.

This is my first listen with Grace Glass. I was worried for a moment with the reading of the title. It felt slow and drawn out with pauses between the words and like she was trying to enunciate clearly for the listener. Once we get into the story she slips into different tones and feel for the characters as they speak. There are moments I felt she was trying hard for clear speaking and enunciating the words crisp which slowed the momentum slightly. But as a whole, I enjoyed Grace's impressions of the characters and emotions as they spoke.

We start exactly where the first book stopped. They are leaving the secret tunnels of the castle. Bree is bombarded with emotions at this moment. Her father has been killed, she killed an enemy that was trying to kill her, and she's feeling conflicting feelings for Caden. Now she has to flee the castle and figure out what to do with the knowledge she learned that will affect her and Aleta. Bree struggles with what she's done and what was done to Da. All of this affects Bree in more than a sadness, and she struggle with that on her own too. Bree needs to accept who she is, and not worry about others. This book is her struggles in doing just that.

Bree is full of worries and she needs someone to talk things out with, but there is no one. She compares herself to the regal air of Aleta, and doubts she'll ever have that way about herself. That she will have to keep her secret, if it's even true. Bree does make poor choices in this story. I know she's young and innocent to the way of things, but I had to roll my eyes a time or two. However, the bad decisions bring her learn new things. But did she learn from what she did wrong? I don't know.

This book has alternating POV's between Bree and Caden. This gives us the view of what is happening with the King that's maddeningly obsessed with taking Nereidium and Bree along with Aleta and Tregle trying to get away. We also get short sections at the end of each chapter that are sections from a journal or letters sent while the civil war starts.

There are people who die. I was worried about those who do the killing, at such a young age. At first I didn't think the actions affected them, but then we see the struggles they have with the ghosts they face after the actions settle in. I'm glad they struggled with these actions, it makes them feel as they have a heart and conscience.

In the beginning, I found Bree's sections a bit slow as we wait for her to leave the city. We learn of a few new pieces, like the Underground. But Caden's sections, that feel shorter, are more enticing as he's in trouble with his father, the king.

We end on a good yet suspenseful note. I am curious as to what comes next. Will Bree, Caden, Aleta, and Tregle along with their new friends get the help they need? Will they fight the Egrian King? Where will everyone fall in the way of stations? I am curious to see this through to the end.

No middle book syndrome here!

This second book in the series picks up right where ToSaS left off – with Bree and her friends fleeing the king. Bree is burdened with new secrets and finds that her power over water is more unreliable than ever, which makes her escape far more difficult than she had anticipated!

What Fed My Addiction:

No second book syndrome.
I felt like this second book was easily as strong as the first, possibly even slightly stronger, since we’d gotten all of those fantasy tropes out of the way. Even though much of the second installment was spent running , it never got dull – there was plenty of conflict and action along the way!

Caden’s POV.
I loved that we got to see the world through Caden’s eyes in this one! Understanding his conflicted feelings over his father made me care for him even more deeply than I had in the first book. And, even though Caden and Bree were apart for much of the book, I never felt like the story was disconnected in any way. Ellision did a wonderful job of weaving it all together.

New characters.
There were a few new characters introduced in this book, and I was a fan of them all. I love that Ellision gives her secondary characters depth and weight in the story.

Bree’s struggle with her powers.
This was a theme in this second book – Bree struggling to understand and control the element that has claimed her. I loved that her understanding of her powers was sort of wrapped up in her struggle to trust other people and the ghosts of her past that haunt her. She’s new to Elemental powers, but she has trouble confiding in the people who could help her because she feels like she needs to hide things from them – both because she doesn’t want to admit her shortcomings and because she fears some of the answers she might get.

What Left Me Wanting More:

Secrets and lies.
This book had pretty much everything I loved about the first book, so there wasn’t a whole lot that I didn’t like. Bree’s inability to admit her lack of powers or to confide in anyone about the fact that she was actually the princess (or talk about certain other issues which I won’t mention because they’d be spoilery) did go on a bit too long for my taste, but considering that conflict based on characters not talking to each other is a pet peeve of mine, it actually didn’t bother me nearly as much as it normally would have. (This was probably helped by the fact that there were plenty of other conflicts to keep me distracted!)

So, overall, book two in this series definitely lives up to the high standard that Ellision set in the first book. I’m eager to see how she finishes this trilogy off!

The Narration:

It took me just a little bit to get used to a new narrator for this second book, but Grace Glass’s voice was similar enough to Misty Daugherty’s that I might not have even noticed the difference if I hadn’t listened to them back-to-back. I think that Glass did a fantastic job delineating the voices. Since the book was told in both Caden’s and Bree’s POV’s and there were some characters with an accent (a Russian sounding accent), Glass had more to do than the narrator of the first book. Glass also managed to capture Bree’s spirit well – and matched Daugherty’s general narration style, which I appreciated.

I give this book 4/5 stars.

Outstanding Non-Stop YA Nautical Adventure!

Riot of Storm and Smoke is a fantastic follow up to the first book in the Threats of Sky and Sea series by Jennifer Ellision. No sophomore slump here — it's actually much improved! Like I mentioned in my review of the first book, this series is a cross between the Princess Diaries and The Last Airbender due to our heroine growing up not knowing she is of royal blood and because certain people are born with the ability to control the natural elements. At the end of the first book, we discover Bree has the ability to control water, which is a very unique talent and she is the first to grace the boundaries of Egria with such powers in 16 years. Bree and her friends Aleta and Tregle escape the Egrian King, but not without the loss of Bree's father. This book centers around Bree's and her friends's long treacherous journey to the kingdom of Nereidium, whose land and its people are known for their affinity with water (just the opposite of the Egrians). Meanwhile Prince Caden recruits hundreds of supporters to overthrow his evil father who will stop at nothing to capture Bree so he can use her and her power as a weapon against Nereidium. With the help of the underground and some wonderful strong supporting characters, our quartet of heroes finally reach the Nereid shores after a truly horrific and epic battle on the high seas.

There are several things that made this story so much better than the first book in the series: First, better character development of the four main characters; we get glimpses into their childhoods and the circumstances that helped shape them into the outstanding characters that they are. Second, the intensity and sense of danger start from the very first chapter. Bree, Aleta, and Tregle are literally fleeing for their lives; you can't help but feel the pressure and struggles the three friends face. Plus, for the first half of the book Caden is being brutally tortured by his father in the King's attempts to find out where Bree escaped to. Third, I really appreciated the way the couple's relationships were handled with no graphic sex scenes. Fourth, Bree never gave up on her friends, even when she was separated from them and thought her powers abandoned her. Bree never abandoned them and never stopped looking for them until she eventually found them and freed them from impending slavery. And Fifth, the ending was simply sublime! I couldn't have thought it possible to have such a great ending in a second book without it being a cliffhanger. Bravo, Ms. Ellision!

I listened to the Audible version of this story narrated by Grace Glass who did an outstanding job. Grace portrayed Bree as a very likable young lady surrounded by unbelievable events. She had great intonation and pace, keeping the story suspenseful throughout. She had differing voices for male and female characters, and expressed urgency when appropriate. Despite receiving a copy of this book in exchange for a review, I loved it so much I listened to all 9+ hours all in one day. I can't think of any higher praise than saying I just couldn't stop listening to it!

WILLIAM EVANS, (1870-1950) a noted American Bible teacher, was born in Liverpool, England, in 1870. Following several years in various pastorates, he was appointed director of the Department of Bible at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Agile Performance Improvement demonstrates the mutual benefits that accrue to the worlds of performance consulting and agile software development when the values and principles of both are blended synergistically under the guidance of practitioners skilled in both. The agile performance improvement model blends the principles of human performance technology with the frameworks and practices of Agile. The result is an approach that maximizes the value of interactions among the consultant, the work team, and the customer. Unlike traditional end-to-end waterfall processes, agile performance improvement delivers value continuously and in small increments, relentlessly focusing on outcomes of value to the customer. Building on structures of Agile that are used in software development, such as Scrum, the agile performance improvement model considers the human component of holistic solutions in establishing a continuous stream of value.

Bob Winter, a performance consultant, was the product owner for the corporate education scrum supporting an agile transition initiative for hundreds of engineering teams. From this cross-disciplinary experience, he discovered that the two cultures, two languages, and two methodologies of performance consulting and agile software development are—far from being incongruent, incompatible, or irrelevant to each other—in fact ideally suited to complement and support each other. Being agile improves the effectiveness of the performance consultant, and applying the lessons of human performance technology improves the effectiveness of software development teams.

In Agile Performance Improvement, Winter teaches performance consultants how to apply agile principles, values, and methods usefully to the tasks of optimizing human performance in areas of practice not only adjoining but also well beyond the realm of software and IT engineering, such as corporate learning solutions, human resources systems, and non-software products. Conversely, he shows engineering teams immersed in an agile environment how to boost their performance using the principles and techniques taught and cultivated by performance consultants. The author, who has worked extensively on both sides of the traditional divide, recounts entertainingly but informatively how both sparks and fur can fly when geeks encounter people people.

About the Author
Bob Winter is Principal Education Consultant and Practice Lead at CA Technologies, responsible for developing and implementing learning strategy in support of agile transformation within a community of 6,000 software engineers and for fostering a performance consulting community of practice within human resources. He previously worked in large-scale instructional design and program management at Fidelity Investments and Bank of America. Winter is a Certified Performance Technologist, a Certified Scrum Product Owner, and a member of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) and the ScrumAlliance. Winter took his BA in English from Cornell University and his MA in Education from Seton Hall University. Winter runs the It Aint Training blog and tweets as @TheBobWinter.

Really Helpful and Insightful Even For A Lawyer

Even as an attorney, I found "Agile Performance" to be enormously helpful. I'd never considered the dynamics of team performance before. After all, my field is filled with lone wolves. But what I learned from the book has sharpened the way I work with my partners, associates and legal assistants. If it's good for me, I'm sure it'll be educational and informative for you.

Also, you should know that the author, Bob Winter, makes the books easy to read. The text is animated with insightful and entertaining anecdotes from many areas of work and life, and they genuinely illustrate how you need both agile and human performance improvement to maximize team performance. Who knew that bad French fries, a public skateboard park, or a customer service disaster at a car rental agency could yield such insights about how even lawyers can better collaborate?

Scrum: It's Not Just For Software Development Anymore

For many years now, Agile techniques and particularly Agile Scrum have really taken over how software projects are managed. I’ve been fortunate to work in software companies using these techniques, and for creative work there may not yet be anything better.

If you’ve not worked in Agile Scrum, it’s first important to understand that one of the most important aspects of working this way is the need for everyone to communicate...EVERY DAY. To the uninitiated this sometimes seems wasteful; Shouldn’t our workers have their heads down working? Shouldn’t they be concentrating on the tasks at hand? Certainly, it may be possible to work quickly in that way. But those “heads down” techniques simply do not afford the opportunities for the team to work closely together, to learn from one another, to create a common vision of success, and perhaps most important to innovate TOGETHER. For indeed, two heads ARE better than one, and seven or so better still. But the benefits of Agile Scrum need not be limited to simply software development. These techniques can work well in almost any creative venture.

I recently had the opportunity to work with Bob Winter as the Technical Editor of his new book: Agile Performance Improvement: The New Synergy of Agile and Human Performance Technology. In this book Bob describes a way that learning and development oriented performance consultants or technologists can work with their clients and their creative teams in the solution of performance problems. What I enjoyed about the book is not only how it brought together an obviously deep understanding of both performance management and agile methodologies but also the extremely easy reading style that helped bring the explanations of potentially boring topics to life and engaged one's attention throughout.
