Linda authored her first book, The Pig Is In My Mouth - In Memory of Beatrice Reaves in September 2007. Linda Reaves is also a poet, soloist, speaker and family historian. At the age of 14, she received training through the Higher Ability High School Students Program of Art, Music and Science Appreciation at Rust College, Holly Springs, Mississippi. Linda lives in Memphis, Tennessee with her son, Nathaniel Reaves.

Linda Reaves--a voice that summons, a voice to be heard

As in Mildred Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and Claude McKay's "My Mother," Linda Reaves’ Threads to Which I Belong crosses into that deeply spiritual place where blood and soil become inseparable within the bonds of love and family. Linda Reaves’ voice as an author is remarkably strong. I am reminded of the time travel in Octavia Butler’s Kindred when I consider the portrayal of Eliza Jane within the story and then the “revealing” of Linda Reaves herself in the epilogue. It is as if Eliza Jane and the author live simultaneously, which is intriguing. I only wish the book were two hundred pages longer. Reaves may have to write a sequel to satisfy her readers whose appetites-- I am certain-- she has whet. Long live Eliza Jane along with the entire McDonald-Reaves family!

Treat yourself to this....my good friend Linda Darlene Reaves wrote this inspirational piece. I remember listening to her often times when the voices of her ancestors were poking and prodding and pushing her to investigate her family history. Pushed her down to Lake Reaves and the families LAND and all the treasures that would be revealed there. This work may push you towards your elders so that you might know the richness of your own family history. Great work from a truly talented author who has a wonderful way of threading words together.

Precious, priceless & perfectly told! I read my copy & purchased another for my mom. Ms Reaves brings you into the lives of her family during a time of history that her people suffered deeply. Yet it's not the suffering that you remember but the love strength & perseverance. The questions that Ms Reaves leaves her readers with at the end of her book make you ponder & seek to know your family past history & respect their perseverance.

Having really enjoyed, “The Killing Season,” which was the first thriller featuring Carter Blake, I was very happy to receive a copy of the sequel. Blake, as we know, is a specialist in finding people who do not want to be found and the beginning of this novel finds him locating the daughter of a wealthy man and returning her home. His job done, he wonders whether to return to the place he calls home, when his attention is drawn to a news story on the television in his hotel room. A woman has been killed in Los Angeles and other bodies have been discovered buried nearby. The method of killing reminds Blake of a man he once knew, when he was in an elite fighting unit.

Meanwhile, in LA, the killer dubbed, “The Samaritan,” is being hunted by Detective Jessica Allen and her partner, Detective Jonathan Mazzucco. The Samaritan has been given the name by the press, after it is suggested that he stops to offer help to drivers who have broken down, before abducting and killing them. As in the first novel, Blake’s offer of help is not initially warmly welcomed – although Allen is convinced once speaking to Special Agent Elaine Banner, who featured in, “The Killing Season.” However, Blake’s motives are not initially clear and Mazzucco is sceptical about why he is offering his services without payment.

This is another fast paced thriller. The novel combines flashbacks of the killer’s first crime, the investigation by Allen and Mazzucco and the story featuring Blake; including his time in the ‘Winterlong’ operation. Allen is an interesting character; intelligent and resourceful, while also something of an outsider in her department. Mazzucco is a new father and his wife is jealous of his being partnered by an attractive woman, while there are plenty of other side characters to give the novel depth. There are lots of plot twists and turns and an exciting ending in a book where the pace never lets up. An excellent second novel in what I hope will become a long running series. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

Carter Blake Returns To Hunt A Serial Killer

"The Samaritan" is the second Carter Blake action/thriller novel by Mason Cross, following "The Killing Season". Blake, a former black ops agent is now a loner who specializes in finding people who don't want to be found. Some are comparing Carter Blake to Jack Reacher and while there are similarities, there are also clear differences; indeed, suffice it to say that fans of Lee Child's Jack Reacher series should welcome Carter Blake to the same genre without trying to compare the two.

Carter employs "tricks of the trade", an insightful intuition, and just focused people skills to track and/or predict where elusive characters may strike next as he hopscotches around the country. Each of the first two novels in the series deal with the uncomfortable fact that Blake has no official law enforcement position or credentials so he is always a prime suspect when he offers his services and shares knowledge and ideas that local enforcement officials do not have. This may require some tinkering in further offerings of the series as it could become a formulaic and tedious start to each new book.

In "The Samaritan", Blake catches a news story of a young woman killed in California with a very distinctive method and weapon, which Blake recognizes as the signature of a former colleague, Dean Crozier. He heads to LA where he offers his services at no charge to Det. Jessica Allen and Det. Jonathan Mazzucco, both of whom are immediately suspicious--as are LAPD higher ups who don't trust Blake nor want his interference. But soon, more bodies are discovered with each bearing the same distinctive kill marks. Blake and the detectives form a tenuous alliance to pursue the serial killer who now knows Blake is on his trail--and has plans to terminate his former colleague. Soon, bodies begin piling up as Blake and Allen are not sure of who to trust, even their LAPD associates.

"The Killing Season" is a well written and executed novel with credible dialogue and believable characters. I enjoy the Carter Blake character and believe he has great promise to develop a wide following of fans of the action/thriller suspense genre. A significant similarity to the Jack Reacher series, are philosophical conflicts that inevitably arise spotlighting the bureaucratic "by the book" form of justice and the "no holds barred" form of street justice--often highlighting how modern rules of engagement and judicial restraints leave some criminals "untouchable" until a loner who doesn't play by all the rules appears to exact justice of a different kind. And it is often engrossing how Blake uses his unique intellectual and instinctual talents to keep a step ahead of the villains. Although I preferred "The Killing Season", I greatly enjoyed this novel and I can recommend it and the planned series to fans of action thrillers.

Entertaining series for those liking thrillers.....

Mason Cross channels Michael Connelly in this follow-up to his 2015 thriller, The Killing Season.

Although not as thorough as Connelly's Harry Bosch Las Angeles-based mysteries, this particular story,too, takes place in the City of Angels as "Carter Blake" (a man with multiple names) goes across country to seek out a former fellow black ops soldier who seems to be traveling across country leaving a trail of unexplained killings in his wake. Using LA as background for this particular story, Cross reintroduces us to Blake and his skill of tracking down people who don't want to be found. Cross' hero actually tends to take a somewhat secondary role, much as he did in his debut in "The Killing Season" -- leaving much of the details and events to another strongly portrayed female named Jess Allen. Much like FBI Agent Elaine Banner in Cross' first book, Allen has to overcome male bias and tradition in her field and is portrayed as a no-nonsense, highly-skilled officer.

I read both of the author's books in a matter of days simply because his topic and presentation was engaging and well-prepared. I don't find his lead character to be nearly on the level of a Bosch or a Jack Reacher (as suggested on the book's cover), but still see him as an evolving and interesting lead. I would have preferred to ending to be a bit more pronounced and aggressive, but I still enjoyed the book and its presentation. If you are into the Michael Connelly, Robert Crais-type book, I think you will like this series.

"STOP Back Pain! Kiss Your Back, Neck and Sciatic Nerve Pain Goodbye!" by Kathi Casey, ERYT, CPI is for those of us who are out of shape from daily stressful lives and taking no time for ourselves and for those of us who sit too long at work until we have "computer neck" and more. Her techniques are helpful for those who have just gotten over an illness and require physical rehabilitation and energy rejuvenation. For those like me, Kathi Casey focuses on the causes and methods for relieving sciatic pain. Trained in Yoga, Pilates, Somatics and Acupressure, she provides a variety of photographically illustrated techniques, along with easy instructions, to reduce pain, gain flexibility, and lose weight. She features one important pose that relaxes all of the muscles in our bodies without medication. When using this pose prior to the seven major stretching exercises she proposes, the Yogic strengthening methods become easier to do. She includes stretches for all muscles around your hip, lower back, and buttocks as well a neck-and-shoulder maneuver done with finger pressure on applicable muscle points. . . and more. Deep breathing techniques are used while doing her stretch routine. You can modify and replace certain exercises with alternatives so you can fully participate. I know from my personal experience that lying around waiting for the back pain to go away has never been an option. Prolonged rest only creates more weakness, pain, and stiffness. Taking the initiative to make our lives as muscular-skeletal pain-free as possible is the better solution. That is why I highly recommend "Stop The Back Pain" which provides the basic fundamentals for relieving pain. This book is more user-friendly and motivational than most books on this subject.

Excellent book for any type of back or shoulder pain--readon...

After an auto accident a number of years ago, I was told that I would semi recover, yet still have chronic shoulder problems due to a severe injury to my right trapezoidal shoulder muscle. This muscle was ripped and torn and to this day, I still have on and off chronic pain with it. After trying many types of remedies with not much relief, I bought this book. And after reading this book, I was able to understand the reasons for this type of pain. This book gives suggestions of different types of treatments and remedies.
The chapters in this book that have been of the greatest of help to me are:
Chapter 3: Types of Treatment --- In this chapter the author gives 5 types of treatments for back pain. The first four are more of the holistic nature, which I have found will be more of value to me as conventional medicine has not helped me that much and I choose not to take "heavy medications". The five suggested treatments mentioned in this book are:
1) Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
2) The Lifeline Technique
3) The Sedona Method
4) The Mind Body Prescription
5) Surgery
In addtion to chapter 3, chapter 4 gives advice on ICE treatment, Heat treatment, patches, creams and gels with wonderful suggestions.
Chapter 5 is another very helpful chapter called "The East West Connection" This chapter gives superb insight for using Yoga, Qigong, Ayurveda, and Healing Touch/Reiki. These types of eastern treatment go back for thousands of years and are become more and more in use in the United States these days as for many people, these methods of healing are quite effective.
Chapter 6 - Stress and Your Back and Neck Pain - explains how stress can bring on pain in the body especially in the neck, shoulder and back! And the author suggests breathing exercises in order to calm both the mind and also the body!
Chapters 8 - 10 have excellent exercises and stretches (some as gentle yoga exercises that I have tried and so far seem to be very effective).
The conclusion of this book has an very through list of resources and a reading list that is very helpful that gives more detailed information regarding health and healing.
The most special aspect that I found in reading this book was the fact that the author herself, has suffered back pain and went on her own healing journey and spent many hours of research in the studies of back-neck-shoulder pain. This book, in my opinion was written not only very well, yet written from the heart! In reading this book, I felt that I had a sympathetic friend beside me explaining about back-neck-shoulder pain. This book, I highly recommend to anyone who suffers from back, neck or shoulder pain!

Finally Getting Relief

I have been suffering for 15 years with pain in my back, buttock, hips, and legs. I have been going to doctors of all kinds and I have received temporary relief. For the past 6 months I have seen a chiropractor and massage therapist and I still have not received relief. Maybe for a day or two and then it was back.

I found this book and decided to give it a try. I am finally getting some relief from techniques suggested from this book. I still have some pain but I am able to stop during the day and get relief from these techniques.

I have discovered that my pain is probably sciatic nerve related and with just the relaxation technique and one of the stretch exercises I am able to get relief and I am able to actually function with daily tasks. I am looking forward to adding other techniques and suggestions from this book and making them part of my daily exercise.

I highly recommend this book. It is a short read yet very informative.

About the Author
Peter Deadman studied acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in England and China, and for the past 20 years has been in private practice in Brighton, England. In 1979 he founded The Journal of Chinese Medicine which he edits, writes for, and publishes. He has also been a teacher of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, and has lectured widely throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Israel, Australia, and the United States. Mazin Al-Khafaji studied acupuncture in England and China, followed by intensive studies in modern and medical Chinese in Taiwan. In 1987 he graduated as a Doctor of Chinese Medicine from the Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and has since been in private practice in Brighton where he specializes in dermatology. Dr. Al-Khafaji is also a frequent lecturer in Chinese medicine in the United Kingdom and Europe. Kevin Baker qualified in Medicine at Cambridge University and St. George's Hospital Medical School in 1979, subsequently specializing in Accident and Emergency Medicine and Surgery. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in London in 1983, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1986. Thereafter, he pursued studies in acupuncture in England and China, which he currently practices in addition to psychotherapy and general medicine.

Best physical quality ever. Good printing Good paper.

Before going into the academic review, i have to tell you how much i love the printing and the paper!
Best quality in any textbook for medicine, western or chinese.
Paper is thick, soft to touch. Print color is gentle on eyes. Even the fonts look great.

Academia : While the best teacher in medicine is our patients, this book is a nice starting point for the newly initiated into the world of acupuncture. Nothing really great or so special that it surpasses all other texts, but good enough to be on your shelf as one of the main "utility" textbook. Good references throughout every chapter. I feel more reassured when reading this book compared to others with scantier references.

Best Reference for its Niche, but consider the DVD multimedia version.

A very well conceived, comprehensive and organized text of acupuncture, for the whole journey from beginning to advanced practice. It provides a very rich and in depth summary of information about each point, both in terms of modern usage and plus selected highlights from the classical chinese texts. There is more specific detail on each point in this manual than I have found in any other source, including for the extra points. It is a delightful resource to just read. The language is clear, straightforward and does not bog down in overly heavy detail either. It is well enough organized to assist in problem solving for particular conditions.

But, I recommend searching a little further and considering an even richer treasure -- the DVD multimedia verison of this same Manual. It contains everything in the printed text plus some additional enhancements. On the DVD, it is generally easier to appreciate the organization of points by their meridians, their inter-relationships and to follow well-designed sections detailing out the anatomy of critical landmarks such as the spinous processes, ribs, and other bony landmarks. Both the text and DVD contain thorough coverage on precautions to take when needling near organs. Both have extensive charts, historical information and cross-referencing by indications.

The interactive study tools in the DVD version and the ability to construct your own practice tests, as well as the ease of computer-added search make the digital version my favorite over the printed text.

One Caveat: It is important to know that the DVD employs frustrating DRM limitations which require that the user keep the DVD in their disk drive anytime they want to use the program. I find this intermittently slows down acquisition of a link and occasionally necessitates rebooting the entire computer due to some odd hangup. Printed texts fortunately bypass these irritations.

About the Author

Lavinia Stan is Associate Professor of Political Science at St. Francis Xavier University, Canada, where she also headed the Center for Post-Communist Studies. The author, co-author, or editor of five dozen peer-reviewed articles and nine book -- including Religion and Politics in Post-Communist Romania and 1989-2009: Incredibila aventura a democratiei dupa comunism (both with Lucian Turcescu), the Encyclopedia of Transitional Justice (co-edited with Nadya Nedelsky), Transitional Justice in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union and Transitional Justice in Post-Communist Romania: The Politics of the Past -- she specializes in religion and politics, transitional justice, democratization, secret services, communist repression and dissidence, as well as governmental performance.

Lucian Turcescu is Professor of Historical Theology at Concordia University, Canada, and the head of the Theological Studies Department at that university. The author, co-author, or editor of six books and dozens of scholarly articles, he specializes in religion and politics, early Christianity, Orthodox Christianity, and ecumenism. Among his publications are: Gregory of Nyssa and the Concept of Divine Persons and Religion and Politics in Post-Communist Romania (both published with Oxford University Press, 2005), Dumitru Staniloae: Tradition and Modernity in Theology (Centrul de Studii Romanesti, 2002), and The Reception and Interpretation of the Bible in Late Antiquity (co-edited, published with Brill, 2008). Turcescu is also past President of the Canadian Society for Patristic Studies.

About the Author
Asoke K. Talukder has been with the IT industry for about 25 years. He has held senior positions in different technology companies in India and abroad. In his last industry association, he was the founder-CTO of Cellnext, the pioneering wireless technology company in India offering technology and solutions in the domain of GSM, GPRS, SMS, MMS, Intelligent Networks, CDMA, and 3G. Since January 2003, he has been with the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore and is currently the DaimlerChrysler Chair and Associate Professor at IIITB. Asoke has worked in the USA, UK, Singapore, and India for companies like Microsoft, Oracle, Informix, Sequoia, NEC, Fujitsu-ICIM, Digital, iGate, Blue Star Infotech, ICL to name a few. A postgraduate in Physics from the University of Calcutta (1976), he set up the first X.25 network in India for the Department of Telecommunications way back in 1986. Later, he set up the first Java Centre in India in 1998. He was a key engineer for Oracle Parallel Server for Hewlett-Packard HP-FX fault tolerant computers as well as for the 64 bit Informix for DEC Alpha.

He is a recipient of many international awards for innovations and professional excellence including the ICIM Professional Excellence Award, ICL Services Trophy, ICL Chief Executive Excellence award, Atlas Club Excellence Award, etc. One of his ubiquitous middleware products was awarded the IBM Solutions Excellence Award in 2001; one other product on Java Card security was recipient of an award at the GSM World Congress in 2003.

Roopa R. Yavagal completed her B.E. Computer Science from Basaveshwar Engineering College, Bagalkot, Karnataka in 1998. After her graduation, she joined the technical team at Cellnext and developed applications for cellular companies in India in the technology domain of GSM, GPRS, and CDMA. She did her M Tech from the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITB) in 2001. Her areas of interest include wireless application and service creation in wireless domain. She is currently working with Symphony Services, Bangalore.
