Broken down into 46 succinct, eloquent chapters, the story begins in medias res with narrator Michael recounting his discovery of a mysterious stranger living in an old shed on the rundown property the boy's family has just purchased: "He was lying there in the darkness behind the tea chests, in the dust and dirt. It was as if he'd been there forever.... I'd soon begin to see the truth about him, that there'd never been another creature like him in the world." With that first description of Skellig, the author creates a tantalizing tension between the dank and dusty here-and-now and an aura of other-worldliness that permeates the rest of the novel. The magnetism of Skellig's ethereal world grows markedly stronger when Michael, brushing his hand across Skellig's back, detects what appears to be a pair of wings. Grade 5-9?Exploring a tumbling-down shed on the property his family has just bought, Michael finds Skellig, an ailing, mysterious being who is suffering from arthritis, but who still relishes Chinese food and brown ale. Michael also meets his neighbor Mina, a homeschooled girl. When she's not trying to open his eyes and ears to the world around him, she is spouting William Blake. As Michael begins nursing Skellig back to health, he realizes that there is something odd about his shoulders. Together, he and Mina move Skellig to a safe place, release the wings they find on his back from his jacket, and look after him until he eventually moves on. Throughout the story, readers share Michael's overriding concern for his infant sister, who is gravely ill. In the end, little Joy comes home from the hospital safe and happy and Michael's life has been greatly enriched by his experiences with her, Skellig, and Mina. The plot is beautifully paced and the characters are drawn with a graceful, careful hand. Mina, for all her smugness, is charmingly wide-eyed over Skellig. Michael is a bruising soccer player but displays a tenderness that is quite touching and very refreshing. Even minor characters are well defined. The plot pivots on the question of what Skellig is. It is a question that will keep readers moving through the book, trying to make sense of the cleverly doled out clues. An Enchanting book!

As a reading specialist,I enjoy taking the time to read children's books as they are sometimes better than adult novels! Skellig was a remarkable,enchanting,spiritual journey with a young boy,Michael,going through a family trauma as well as trying to adjust to a new home. When he and his new neighbor,Mina,discover Skellig, the real page-turning begins. The mystery of Skellig's identity plays along with the increasing severity of Michael's baby sister's illness. It was difficult for me to put the book down because the author keeps you guessing what will happen next. Readers will become deeply involved with all the "happenings" towards the end.This is a novel I would recommend to kids in grades 6 and up.It would also be a great read- aloud for families as well. I hope David Almond writes another novel soon!

Magical, Mystical, and Wonderful!

I loved this book. My granddaughter has been reading "My Name is Mina". I wanted to find some of David Almond's other books. I got this on Amazon's Kindle. I am going to get a copy for my granddaughter.. It is magical and mystical and wonderful for an 11 year old artistic, creative child as is my granddaughter! And I love it too!

Dreamy, lovely book

I had been told for many years to read David Almond's work, and I finally decided to download "Skellig" when finding some books for my new Kindle. I can't believe I didn't read this sooner. I guess this book had been marketed toward younger people, and the story is definitely accessible for older children, but it really is great for anyone of any age.
"Skellig" is dreamlike and mysterious, thoughtful, both visceral and philosophical, beautiful and concise prose. I made myself stretch it out over a few days, but I could see this novel being devoured in just an hour or two. The day after I finished I went and got a hard copy of "My Name is Mina", the "prequel" from the library, and it was equally as excellent.
I recommend this if you like semi-surreal fiction, if you're looking for a book that ponders knowledge and purpose, or if you simply appreciate lovely writing. I feel this is also one of those books that you should read a few different times in your life because can read it differently each time. So if you like it, keep it in your collection!

A Professor's View of "Introductory Electronics..."

As a second year undergraduate Biomedical Engineering student I used Simpson's text for my first Biomedical Instrumentation class at Duke University. At the time the professor told us that we would have a tough time with the book, but over time we would find that it was an outstanding reference and as our sophistication grew we would come to appraciate it more. That has certainly been the case!
As a professor now, teaching my own Biomedical Instrumentation class I still find this text to be the best on out there. It provides a thorough background on many of the key concepts of Electrical Engineering including AC and DC circuits, Fourier analysis, Semiconductor Physics, Transistors, Op Amps, Op Amp Ciucuits, Digital Logic, and even microprocessors. Some of this is admittedly dated, especially the digital sections, but the fundamentals are all there and I have not seen another book that covers so much, so clearly.
One of the great features of this text is its practical bent. There is a whole chapter on noise; describing phyical sources and some ways of dealing with probelms. There is also an excellent appendix describing various types of capacitors, inductors, and resistors. It answers great questions like: Should I use a ceramic capacitor in my design or an aluminum electrolytic?
Of the roughly 50 books on the shelf in my office, this is the one that is most commonly missing. I recommend this book as an excellent reference in an area where there are a lot of books available.

THE reference book on electronics

I highly recommend Simpson's book. It provides clear, accurate information on all those things that we may have missed (or forgotten). His treatment of solid state devices is detailed, but accurate (too many other books gloss over the SS theory).

The only reason that I can't give it 5 stars is it's age. I would prefer an updated edition. If you have a copy, keep it.

I rawther love love love this book!

As we all know, Eloise is six and she lives at the Plaza Hotel with her Nanny who says things three times, her dog Weenie, her turtle Skipperdee and two dolls. When I was a child, I adored this book and wanted to be just like Eloise. She does whatever she wants and gets away with it.
As an adult, I feel so sorry for Eloise because her mother only sends for her when it's sunny and otherwise isn't present. What a poor little girl to grow up so alone!
However, this is a tremendously humorous and beautifully illustrated classic that can always make me grin from ear to ear. I looooovve room service too! Oh, and charge it please. Thank you very much.

You'll either love or hate this book....

This is a book that parents will either love or hate. I can certainly identify with the parents who gave this book 1 star. It is true that you'd be horrified if you had a child that acted like Eloise - she's naughty, rude, demanding and disrespectful. This book was written in 1955 and yes, one illustration shows the nanny smoking in front of Eloise. The text is written as a reflection of Eloise's internal dialogue, so no, it is not always grammatically correct. The text reminds me a little of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day. It is also true that the parents are nowhere to be seen in this book. Eloise has essentially been 'abandoned' by her parents and is cared for exclusively by the nanny. Her day is spent roaming around the Plaza Hotel.

Why the 5 stars then? Because this is a very funny book with extremely engaging 1950s style illustrations. Eloise endears herself to you despite her naughtiness. There are many things in this book that you could use to teach your child a moral lesson if you wished to. It is a VERY CLEVER book despite what to some might seem major drawbacks. I do agree with the other reviewers though that 4 - 8 years is a totally inappropriate age group. The dust cover of the book itself states for 7 years up which is far more on the mark. The book is more of an `early reader' for a 7 or 8 year old - it's not a bed-time story for a younger child. I can see how little girls would absolutely love it!

This is a book that you really want to borrow from the library before you buy it - what other reviewers have said is true in this case I think - don't rely on reviews - see the book for yourself.

Of Historic Interest Only

This is a very bad book, but one very much worth reading, at least for Rex Stout fans. It was written at the beginning of his career, when he was much under the influence of the adventure writers like Rider Haggard and Arthur Conan Doyle. It features all the outlandish elements of those books (beautiful women, romantic heroes, exotic locales, alien races), but much less deftly handled.
It is no surprise that after this fiasco, Stout took a long break before coming back with Fer de Lance, the first Nero Wolfe novels. Even then, he had not truly lost the brash, unsophisitcatd voice found in Under the Andes.
Don't read this book looking for a great plot, or nuanced characterization, or for the humor you will find in the Wolfe books. But if you love those books as I do, you might want to see how their author got to where he could write them.

Crude and monotonous early adventure novel by Rex Stout

This reviewer loves Stout's sublime Nero Wolfe mysteries, and also the testosterone-fueled pulp adventure novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Arthur Conan Doyle, and their contemporaries. Unfortunately, Under the Andes, a very early outing by Stout, is almost embarassingly bad. It lacks the situational humor and subtle characterization that give the Nero Wolfe novels their timeless appeal, and it's not creative enough in its situations or plot to succeed as an adventure novel.

The story is told from the first-person point of view; it involves the aristocratic hero, his younger brother, and a supremely desirable female who is reminiscent of Princess Dejah Thoris in Burroughs' John Carter books. What little plot there is centers around a series of adventures and escapes, literally Under the Andes. Here, the hero is as arrogant and abrasive as Nero Wolfe, but Stout hadn't yet discovered the secret of successfully portraying this type of protagonist, which is to look at him through a third person who can gently poke fun at him while still admiring him. Let's face it, if we had seen the world through Nero Wolfe's eyes instead of Archie Goodwin's, who among us wouldn't have been rooting for the bad guy to get away every time? It's tough to even tolerate, let alone sympathize with, two of the three main characters; only the hero's younger brother is likable in his naive bravery.

When compared to its adventure-novel contemporaries, this book doesn't have much going for it. It doesn't have humor, characters you can like, or subtlety (read even the first chapter of The Lost World by Conan Doyle for comparison); and it doesn't have the straightforward-yet-immensely-profound life perspective of Burroughs' early Tarzan books.

However, if you're an aspiring writer, give this a read; you'll see how even the great writers have to start somewhere. The book isn't really abysmally bad; it's just abysmally bad compared to what it could have been if written by a more mature Rex Stout.

For True Stout Fans-- all others avoid

This earnest adventure novel reads like a silly pulp written by someone with only half the smarts of the man who created Nero Wolfe. Of course, Stout fans (and I am one) love the brilliant Nero Wolfe novels with an irrational passion-- they're truly fine reading and seem just as fresh to day as when they were written 70 or 60 or 50 years ago. That said, this very early novel by Stout is a stolid attempt at a cliffhanger-- once the caverns under the Andes are reached, the narrative becomes repetitive as escape follows escape follows escape from the evil denizens of the deep. Only true fans of Stout will be even remotely amused by this early work-- luckily, he learned a lot in the 20 years that followed this exercise, and the first Nero Wolfe was as good as the last. (Note: this work is available in its entirety on the net.)

I will say a lot of the info in here is the same as what he's already learned so I am glad I chose the second grade book rather

My son just finished his first year of 1st grade dual immersion, we speak English at home, I wanted a book to help him not lose the knowledge he's gained over the course of the Summer. I will say a lot of the info in here is the same as what he's already learned so I am glad I chose the second grade book rather than the 1st grade book. This book is a lot thinner than what I was hoping for, I feel the price should only be $2 or $3 rather than close to $5, however I also know in general the bilingual materials seem to cost more period. For example, I bought bilingual books from the scholastic flyers and they were a lot more than the books that were just in English. Overall, this booklet will do what I was hoping for. I hope my review helped you.

About the Author

Srinivas Raj Melkote has been a Professor in the fields of media and communication for more than 30 years. Professor Melkote is currently in his 31st year at the School of Media and Communication in Bowling Green State University, Ohio, USA. He has taught at universities in India, US, and Jamaica. He served as a Fulbright Professor at Manipal University in India and is currently a Fulbright Specialist. Professor Melkote has researched and published extensively on a range of issues ranging from the role of communication in directed social change, participatory communication, international communication, health communication, communication strategies for HIV/AIDS prevention, mass communication theory, quantitative research methods, media effects, and communication pedagogy. His book Communication for Development in the Third World: Theory and Practice for Empowerment, 2nd edition (coauthored with Dr Leslie Steeves) is a core text for courses on media and communication in directed social change in colleges around the world. Professor Melkote’s current interests are examining the role of media and communication in achieving empowerment and social justice. His work in social change communication examines the roles of globalization, economics, politics, and hegemonic discourse in sustaining and widening the inequality gaps between people in societies around the world.

H. Leslie Steeves is a Professor and Senior Associate Dean, Academic Affairs, School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon, USA, where she has taught for 27 years. Professor Steeves’ current research centers on two areas and their intersection: communication and information technologies in developing countries (particularly in sub-Saharan Africa) on one hand, and gender and communication on the other. Her recent publications additionally examine entertainment and tourism representations of Africa. Her research has been published in numerous journals, including Journal of Communication; Communication, Culture & Critique; Communication Theory; International Communication Gazette; and Critical Studies in Media Communication. She is guest editor of a special issue of Communication, Culture & Critique on “Africa the Media and Globalization.” Professor Steeves recently completed a film, Give a Laptop, Change the World: The Story of the OLPC in Ghana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfVrTSq_iKc). She has also coauthored (with Professor Srinivas Raj Melkote) Communication for Development in the Third World: Theory and Practice for Empowerment, 2nd edition (SAGE India, 2001), and published Gender Violence and the Press: The St. Kizito Story (1997). Her work has appeared in numerous anthologies as well, and she serves on several journal editorial boards. In 2013, Professor Steeves received University of Oregon Martin Luther King Jr Award (for promoting cultural diversity and social justice on campus). She has received two Fulbright Scholar grants for teaching and research in Kenya and Ghana, and she directs an annual study abroad program in Ghana.
