A perfect addition to my library!

This high-quality book is, quite simply, stunning. On my first pass all I could do was look at the gorgeous full-page, full-color illustrations on almost every single page. When I went back and started to read, I realized I had to set time aside so I could savor every space-travel adventure that accompanies each illustration.

Anderson not only captures real space and time in his exquisite graphics, but his talent as a storyteller is equal to the task of supporting each image. Whether the reader is traveling through space to imaginary, but possible, planets, or traveling through time on our own mothership, Anderson's depictions of the night sky are stellar-no pun intended. Then, to learn that the stars are in the ACTUAL POSITIONS relative to space and time adds to the awe that these images inspire. To top it all off, the pictures are accompanied by stories that take the reader far, far away, either through space, or time, or both.

It is not a hurry-up-and-read-it book. This coffee-table treat is one to read by the fire, with a cup of hot tea and a cat on the lap. Thank you, Mr. Anderson. You just made my Christmas shopping very easy.

Capturing Wonder - with Scientific Accuracy

This book does something hard to do: It captures the "sense of wonder" that drives many of us to an interest in science, without playing fast and loose with facts. And it has one of the niftiest organizing concepts I've seen in an astronomy book: what would the stars look like from other planets, other planetary systems? What would major astronomical events have looked like in the past? The future?

The author and artist, Erik Anderson, has done a magnificent job. He has produced a genuinely "fun" book. This may qualify as a book for the whole family . . . or, ideally, for that hard-to-buy-for smart youngster, as I speculate on my blog:[...] . . .

The text is crisp, excellent; the pictures are, ahem, "out of this world."

A book that I have been waiting for years.

This is the kind of book that I have been waiting for a while. Vistas of Many World is an interesting journey through the close environment of our sun in space and also in time. Each page of the book includes an artistic view of a place, most of the time a nearby extra-solar planet, plus a short description. The drawing also contains a visualization of the sky as seen from the surface. The text attached to the image discusses what is known about the planetary system and gives to the reader some clues about the stars in the sky as seen from the extra-solar planet. The sky and the star colors and brightness are based on a 3D reconstruction of the nearby environment of our sun, so should be accurate.

The illustrations are superb, the book is well written and the topic is fascinating. I strongly recommend this book to anybody with an interest in the study of exoplanets and our galaxy.

More delights from Thurber's crazy world

The Thurber Carnival is really the must-have offering from the Thurber canon, but this book has some delights of its own. His assessment of the psychology behind his cartoons for The New Yorker is typical Thurber, the man at his sharpest. His gallery of wildlife sketches is as believable as it is ridiculous (his portrait of a gloat standing by a patch of I-told-you-sos being just one example).

An Undervalued Treasure

One of the best books by James Thurber, who has to my mind become one of the great undervalued writers of 20th century America. He is perhaps best known now for his cartoons, of which several of the most famous (including "All right, have it your way -- you heard a seal bark") are in this book. But he was also a masterful writer of short stories, humorous sketches, and essays on a wide range of topics. This book includes several of each, including the series of five essays on soap opera he wrote for the New Yorker in the late 1940's. Thurber's writing is as supple and spare as his cartoons, and his humor profound.

A book to think about

It took me a fairly long time and a second read to come up with an view on Fisher 's brief but fairly deep book. With good engagement with some of the major theorists of postmodern thought Fisher casts a picture of Capital as that which cannot be thought beyond. With deference to a number of the other reviewers, I think it is dismissive of his argument to say there are lots of alternatives. If one believes that, one should confront the argument directly. It seems to me that Capitalism does have an inherent blocking function.

The provisional space Fisher opens is in the development of full blown alternatives to Capitalism that grow out of the promises Capitalism makes and not only does not but cannot keep. Towards the end of this book Fisher gives a number of examples. Capitalism promises an end of bureaucracy, but we live in the most standardised world imaginable. Capitalism promises joy for the individual, but we live in a world of increasing affective disorder. We approach catastrophic ecological collapse. In this space alternatives can be developed.

Again, with respect to other reviewers, I really do not care whether this is Zizek lite or otherwise. There is a well thought out argument here that deserves more engagement and less branding. A good book and heartily recommended.

Look for another health behavior book

After taking several health behavior classes focused on theory, I would say this is the worst book I've ever read on health behavior theory. It's a very hard read to get through because it's not well written, it does not mesh with the current literature on all theories, and it over-emphasizes some very odd examples. Application is important, but by the 5th example, it's redundant. If this is for a class, rent it, do NOT buy it. Trust me, you will never use it again. If this is for your own information on behavior health theories, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. It will not be helpful for you, and I would definitely argue how it presents at least one of the theories it includes.

Easy to read

This is my first review on textbooks. There are just so many textbooks you need to buy as a grad student, but only so few one might actually enjoy while reading/making notes. This is one of those few for me. Very easy to read and follow. I like how authors always had multiple examples to demonstrate how theories and concepts can be applied in each of the chapters. Good textbook!

Much needed and my best pick!

I am working on a PhD in Nursing in which Health Promotion is an integral theory and health an integral concept. I borrowed this text from University of California Berkeley along with many other theory texts. I will likely use the book to help me write my qualifying theory paper and cite these authors for their novel approach to health behavior theory.
The mixing of individual with ecologic perspectives fits my own view while not having to settle on any one theory as the perfect fit because as DiClemente and Salazar explain there is complexity in many ways of looking at health behaviors. The authors highlight many of my favored behavioral theories yet blend the structural environmental perspectives into the mix. A truly original work that not only tells us what is out there but provides new perspectives on understanding what is already known. Bravo, and thank you authors!

About the Author
Gertrude Stein (1874 1946) was born in Pittsburgh to a prosperous German-Jewish family. She was educated in France and the United States, worked under the pioneering psychologist William James, and later studied medicine. With her brother Leo she was an important patron of the arts, acquiring works by many contemporary artists, most famously Picasso, while her home became a popular meeting place for writers and painters from Matisse to Hemingway. Her books include Three Lives, Tender Buttons, and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas.

Miracle year

Of the three great books published 1922/23--Ulysses, The Wasteland, and Geography and Plays--I rate Stein's work the highest. It is a bit daunting at first, though you will probably be amused at least by the wit on every page. But for experiments in poetry, plays, and prose, it by far outstrips Joyce and Eliot. The one essential modernist work. So advanced it is actually postmodernist in its approach to its audience, including, as it does, echoes of what is happening now around her so as to achieve a release from time and to become essentially timeless. Try it and see. This is a great investment. The first edition in four separate bindings is worth seeking out, though Stein tends to be pricey. But just read it in any edition. You'll love it. Bob Finley
