A Big Fan...

I've been a big fan of boris' as long as I can remember. Ever since I picked up his book, "Fantasy Art Techniques" when I was a young boy, I've been hooked. So, when I heard of this book, "Sketchbook", I raced to pick it up. I'm pretty happy with what I've found. Which was a good supply of rough preliminary sketches, finished sketches, finished and painted works and even some life drawing aswell.
Now, Boris' present style on the other hand, is lacking that certain something. His work seems, to me anyway, a bit too comic booky. Don't get me wrong, some of the peices are very strong, but don't compare to some of his earlier works from the 70's and early 80's. Thankfully, those earlier works can also be found in this book aswell, next to his present day peices, making it a more well rounded catalog of work.
This is the first time I have had any exposure to Boris' wife, Julie Bell's work. Although not as good, it has a certain style of it's own and I plan on searching out more books by her in order to establish a more fair opinion.
All in all, it's a good book, worth buying. Even if your not a fan or haven't even heard of Boris Vallejo before, and just like to look at beautiful things, this book is for you.

Human beauty in its most artistic form

I bought this book because I am a new fan of Boris and Julie, primarily interested in their work from an artist's standpoint, and it was more the idea of seeing their human figures in action, rather than looking at fantasy art, that got me to order. But, oh my gosh--I think I see now the attraction of fantasy art! You can feel the human spirit so strongly that it hurts. I think Boris and Julie could draw a piece of Tupperware and have it send chills down your spine.

With "Sketchbook" don't think "unfinished art." The works on these pages are masterpieces in themselves. You feel as if you are literally watching the drawings come to life. If you have any familiarity at all with Boris and Julie's work, you'll love seeing some of their classics in early concept form. And even if you don't recognize specific works, you will nevertheless feel the passion, the vibrancy, the raw, undiluted emotion that lives in the power of their art.

Whether or not you like the fantasy genre really isn't the issue with this book. If you do, of course, you're right in your element. But even if you don't, if you have any interest at all in the beauty of the human form, you will love this book. And if you don't appreciate the beauty of the human form, you will if you buy this book. I have a few other books by Boris and Julie, and they are all excellent. But I think this is my favorite so far.

Nice

Although I am not much of a fan of Boris from a compositional & subject posing perspective I am always excited to see the quality of line and technique he has. Once you strip away all the realistic brush and paint you can see Boris is very talented. His style of hatching and the quality of line he has in graphite and ink are super. Riding a line that is loose and tight at the same time is not easy and Boris makes it happen. Nice pieces.

A Success-Through-Service Book of the First Order

Secret Service is one of the few business books (that is not a narrative case study) that is actually enjoyable to read. John Dijulius, owner of John Robert's Hair Studio & Spa, comments on how his business and many others see customer service not as a necessary evil but as integral to (if not entirely) their product.
While the hair and spa industry is primarily a service industry, Dijulius goes far beyond, dealing with how retail and even distribution companies can better serve their customers and the rewards that those who do will reap. His examples include some of the more obvious ones practitioners as Southwest Airlines and Nordstrom's as well as a number of lesser-known businesses from a variety of industries. In many cases, he highlights businesses that he has had personal experience with, thus illustrating how a satisfied customer can be much more profitable than any marketing that you can buy.
Dijulius also highlights the economics of increasing the value of (and to) your existing customers by reminding them when they may need a product or service and making sure that they are happy after the purchase. He highlights a variety of systems that he and others use to do this such as follow-up thank you cards, newsletters and personalized notes on invoices.
He also reminds us that employee satisfaction is just as important as customer satisfaction (and in fact, directly leads to customer satisfaction). Every business deals with a customer, therefore every business provides a form of customer service--how good is yours? No matter what level you're on, reading this book will certainly improve it! DiJulius has incredble insight into connecting different industries to benefit not only each other, but their customers as well. These ideas, while incredibly brilliant, are easy to understand and implement. I have found the information to be so profound that I've actually revamped our company's orientation for new employees based on it!

Even though I am in the same industry as the author, this book is full of great ideas any business could use to implement systems to improve their customer service. We have used many of the ideas with great results. Mr. DiJulius gives you these wonderful ideas and how to implement them. If you read his book you'll see why his company is so successful. I require my staff to read this book when they are hired. This is one of my favorite business books!

I bought this book in a book store in Westport Ireland. It was a very enjoyable read and I learned so much from the first person POV from Joe Good. The writing was wonderful and I felt like he was a friend of mine. There is tons of stuff you won't find in any history book such as the funny and personable side of Michael Collins as well as the slow pace the fight took after the Easter Rising because the rebels had very little ammunition or weaponry. Great Way to Learn About Social Justice

I've been following Mia Mackenzie's blog for the past two years and it is top knotch. I recommend this book for people wanting to learn about social justice and how it interacts with racism, classism, ableism etc. The text is very approachable and easy to read. I definitely recommend Mia's work to everyone.

As a black queer women this book was great! I would recommend this to lgbtq POC as this book highlights important intersectional discussions and articles from the BGD website and calls out "allies" who primarily speak over minority voices. At times funny, angry or sad, this is a must read!

Used this book at Western Washington University in 2008. I think I'd probably enjoy reading this book now more than I did at the time. It's a really interesting glimpse into China in the early 20th century, but does require some context to really get into it. At the time, it was one of several readings in my Asian Studies class, so it was difficult to get into - but a good book overall.

not my kinda thing

this book is highly touted as a great example of mao dun's socialist realism. well even if it is, i didn't much care for it. i found the heroine to be really irritating, and just her whole experience wasn't something i found myself very interested in. if it weren't for the fact that i had to read this book for class, than i highly doubt i would have finished it. even so, it's not altogether bad or anything, it's just not my thing. hence the review of 3 stars. also, just to note, i don't really like modern Chinese literature as a whole. that may have something to do with why i didn't like this work very much.
