Fantastic book

What you need to know (and what no one seems to understand) is that this book is much more than just about ODBC.

Whatever API you use for database access -- be it ODBC, or DbLib, or embedded SQL, or OLE DB ('objectified' version of ODBC really), or its new, yet another incarnation in .Net -- all of these are nothing more than nearly identical functionally client interfaces to the same damn thing. The _guts_ of the system remain the same (cursors, etc.).

This book is a must if you want to understand the workings of the whole database-access system, rather than just learn a few function calls (which you will never use efficiently if you don't know what takes place inside).

The book should be renamed into something like "Programmatic Database Access Methods", augmented with OLE DB/.Net material, and re-issued. It's a shame it's out of print: most of it is totally relevant today; I don't know of another book that covers networking, cursors, and fetching as clearly and simply from the applications programmer's point of view.

Great book if you want not just to code ODBC, but understand how it happens. The guy doesn't leave anything to guess work.
An absolute must for serious programmers. Afterall, it is written by the author of ODBC.
Don't let the old publishing date keep you away from the book.
Get it, if you can find it.

This book is great. Taught what I needed to know in a relatively short time. Good sample code as well, very important in a subject like this.

Modern classic

I used this book in a high school English course on children's picture-book literature, and I must say it enchanted the older students (14-15 year olds!) Every high school library "deserves" some good quality picture books, and this would make it onto the list everywhere.
It was also used with ESL students in that school, and the quality of the story-telling, and the humour is such that those students never felt offended or that they were being given "baby books". It also helped introduce them to a little bit of Australian cultural icons (minties, lamingtons! )
In my own home it has been a firm favourite for some time and gets repeat requests for bedtime reading.
Is this book the Australian "Where The Wild Things Are"?

Fantastic! Informative! Fun! Educational! Magical!

I read this book to a class of second graders during our unit on Australia. It was a wonderful way to review the Australian animals as well an the cities and foods of the continent. The kids loved the pictures and we took a poll asking who would try all the different foods discussed in the book. Even if you only buy this book for your own kids, it will surely prompt a discussion about other cultures, foods, etc. Well worth the cost!

A timeless classic which will delight children of all ages

Having read this beautifully illustrated and written story for over twelve years of teaching 2-5 year old children it has always been a favourite.Children sit in wonder to what might happen with Hush and Grandma poss in the story.They feel sad when at first nothing works then finally joyfull and happy with the outcome of Hush and Grandma poss adventure for a cure. Which often leads children asking me to re read it.

Quaker Writings: An Anthology, 1650-1920

I have been a member of the Society of Friends for over 25 years and have read many Quaker writings. Thomas Hamm has crafted a concise, accessible condensation of some foundational works that I have found challenging without being too dense to digest. The author of "Quakers in America", Hamm has gleaned enough essential flesh from writings by Fox and others to enlighten and inform reader while respecting brevity and simplicity. The e-book, by the way, is a very convenient medium for quick reference.

Interesting autobiography

Austin Healey is an interesting man, with a dry, caustic sense of humor that he currently uses to mostly good effect as a television commentator on Rugby Union in England. His book is interesting and well written, and if you like him, you'll like it. If you don't like him, and cocky isn't a personality that appeals, that probably isn't the bio for you. It gives Healey's perspective on some turbulent times in English and British rugby, especially the Lions Tour coached by the now World Cup Winning Sir Graham Henry, back in the days when he might not have been setting the world on fire, so much.

It's an honest book, dealing with topics like injury and depression, including the anxiety and depression suffered by fathers after the birth of their children. It made me like Healey more than I did, and it is, at the end of it all, a good 'no kidding, I was there, this is how it happened'. It might be worth a read for those wondering why Martin Johnson didn't fare better as coach of England, too. Very recommended for Leicester Tiger fans.

my favorite book as a child

Awesome art, smart writing, and educational! I actually wanted to be a mammologist (someone who studies mammals), not just a zoologist, for a couple years in elementary school specifically because of this book. I still have my old hardback copy, but recently bought this for my nieces. Little did I know that the author was so prolific. Now I have tons of Ruth Heller books to buy for the kids.

Animals Born Alive and Well

I used this book in a pair with Helen's Chicken's Aren't the Only Ones to study animals with my class. Both books were wonderful. Animals Born Alive and Well provided my students with vivid pictures of mammals. It also discussed the category of marsupials. The books are written so that children can learn these higher level skills. They provided an excellent springboard for discussion. I would suggest this book pair for any classroom studying animals.

Born alive and well

This is one of the most fun of Ruth Hellers books, we read it a lot. All of her books for us are great. My children enjoyed them all and now I read them to my granddaughter and she loves them. The rhyming, illustration is so beautiful and it really keeps my 9 month old granddaughters attention. Can't say enough great things about this author.

Although he displays an occasional uncertainty in his grasp of historical and geographical details, as well as an inclination to verbosity, Cyril has conspicuously influenced the exegesis of his younger contemporary Theodoret of Cyrus, and has made a vital contribution to the development of biblical interpretation in the church.

About the Author
Robert C. Hill, a founder and honorary fellow of the Australian Catholic University's Centre for Early Christian Studies, was a distinguished biblical scholar best known for his prodigious talent as a translator of Patristic biblical commentaries on the Old Testament. Nearly 30 volumes of his translations have been published, many of them in the Fathers of the Church series. In recognition of this work in 2003 he was awarded the papal cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by Pope John Paul II. Most recently, Hill translated the first two volumes in the new Library of Early Christianity Series, Theodoret of Cyrus's Questions on the Octateuch.

Rejuvenate Your Life

Having read "Three Magic Words," also by U.S. Andersen, I am so impressed that I learned so much more. This is an author who writes non-fictions on the universal subconscious mind. And you can read one of his books, after another, and still learn something new, as I have.
I kept asking myself, while reading this book, "What is the secret of secrets?"
Here are some of the many notes that I paid considerable attention to; and what I wrote in the front pages:
1. Meditate everyday for the purposes of falling in love with God.
2. Follow the 4 steps to mastery (a. concentrate upon your relationship with God; b. Accept God's power; c. Give without expecting rewards; d. Love God more, each day)
3. Dedicate your existence to knowing the love of God. Seek to live in this love, and to return this love.
4. There is opportunity every minute of everyday, throughout your life.
5. Abandon your ego.
6. Seek God with all of your heart and soul, within yourself.
7. Get out of your way and let God move through you!
8. When you seek inward union with God you will reflect that union in every part of your life.
9. Money represents the labor of others. And when you have money you are the trustee of their energies, time and effort.
10. Once you have mastered the courage to face reality, no matter what the problem is, your courage will never leave you.
11. "To love is to know me; my innermost nature; the truth that I am. Through this knowledge enter at once to my being." by Bhagavad-Gita
And for me, the Secret of Secrets is:
1. Rather or not you believe in God, God exists.
2. God is molding you on earth.
3. God molds you by tempering you through pain and ordeal, so that you will awaken to your true spiritual birthright.
4. You are predestined, on a spiritual level, not on a worldly level.
5. Your soul goes through orders to refine and purify your understanding.
6. And it's time to let go of your ego, and to accept the laws of your spirit.
Between every other book that I read, for some time to come, I will continue to read every U.S. Andersen book, and reread them, until his messages have become as natural a part of me as my need to be nourished.

Life changing

I have been going through many changes in my life in recent years, from moving to a new country, getting divorced, sending my oldest kid far away, losing the love of my life. All those experiences have made an impact in my life and even though some times I have wanted to just give up, my faith and my spiritual strength have allowed me to endure . This is the last book I have read of this author, the other two started me in a more profound journey of spiritual growth, but this one, The Secret of Secrets, gave me the tools to finally have a stronger, deeper, and everlasting relationship with God.
I truly recommend it, no matter what your religious belief might be, it goes deeper.

Beginning with the premise presented in Three Magic Words ("that man's consciousness is God's consciousness in process of becoming.") this book "lays down a method by which such awareness may be used for the practical end of a richer and fuller life."
