About the Author

Martin Crawford has spent more than 20 years in organic agriculture and horticulture, and is director of the Agroforestry Research Trust, a nonprofit charity that researches temperate agroforestry and all aspects of plant cropping and uses, with a focus on tree, shrub, and perennial crops. The Trust produces several publications and a quarterly journal, and sells plants and seeds. He is the author of several books, including A Forest Garden Year and How to Grow Perennial Vegetables.

Beautiful book marred by typos and inaccuracies

This was a bit of a splurge for me; having known Martin Crawford's name for years, I was really looking forward to seeing his work in print. I must say that the actual book is a bit of a disappointment. I knew that it would be aimed at a UK audience, so that's not a strike against it. In fact, it joins wonderful works by Patrick Whitefield and John Seymour to round out the picture of British forest gardening. But despite the beautiful photography, the book is neither as practical nor as detailed as Gaia's Garden or Edible Forest Gardens. This book adds very little to what they have already contributed, with the exception of a thoughtful consideration of global climate change and its presumed effect on forest gardening, and a chapter on fungi.

More damning, the text is full of typos, and several of the photographs are misplaced and mislabeled. A picture illustrating Oregon grape is actually some sort of currant, for example. Discussions of design are general to the point of frustration; the section on water use says, in essence, "in a drought you'll use more than you think" and then spends two pages on irrigation methods. Again, it's possible that a British climate requires less thought about water than the southeastern U.S., but that sort of generality pervades the book. Save your money for Jacke and Toensmeier.

Fantastic Resource - Buy It!

I just finished reading "Creating a Forest Garden" cover to cover. It's one of the best books on forest gardening I've come across and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in permaculture/edible landscaping. Martin's experiences with his forest garden are concisely presented to the reader and guide you to avoid many mistakes that are often made when starting out. The book not only guides you through the process of successfully laying out the garden, but gives many specifics, has pictures and information on many, many suitable plants and has many creative ideas born from working in the forest garden for so many years. If I were new to permaculture and forest gardening I'd start here. If you've read a lot in this area (like me) this book will become one of your best finds. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

forest gardening made easy!!! (or easier at least)

That's right five stars. Martin has a 16 year old forest garden and talks from experience, not theory. His chapters are brief and concise. I finished the book feeling content that I actually assimilated all valuable info presented by Martin. Unlike some other forest gardening books I've read (cover to cover mind you) this one is short, easy to read and understand, and by no means intimidating. Let me reiterate; martin speaks from 16 years experience. And the icing on the cake... the photos are of an actual forest garden!

Wilderson contends that for Blacks, slavery is ontological, an inseparable element of their being. From the beginning of the European slave trade until now, Blacks have had symbolic value as fungible flesh, as the non-human (or anti-human) against which Whites have defined themselves as human. Just as slavery is the existential basis of the Black subject position, genocide is essential to the ontology of the Indian. Both positions are foundational to the existence of (White) humanity.

Wilderson provides detailed readings of two films by Black directors, Antwone Fisher (Denzel Washington) and Bush Mama (Haile Gerima); one by an Indian director, Skins (Chris Eyre); and one by a White director, Monster’s Ball (Marc Foster). These films present Red and Black people beleaguered by problems such as homelessness and the repercussions of incarceration. They portray social turmoil in terms of conflict, as problems that can be solved (at least theoretically, if not in the given narratives). Wilderson maintains that at the narrative level, they fail to recognize that the turmoil is based not in conflict, but in fundamentally irreconcilable racial antagonisms. Yet, as he explains, those antagonisms are unintentionally disclosed in the films’ non-narrative strategies, in decisions regarding matters such as lighting, camera angles, and sound.

Great Read

I highly enjoyed this book. Sadat in many ways was a man of tremendous wisdom and political savvy. His memoirs span his birth, the free officer movement, Nasser's reign, and Sadat's presidency. Curiously, the book ends right before the Camp David Accords as he talks about the hopes he has in working with Carter. Sadat has many fascinating insights into Egyptian politics and the Middle East. I highly recommend this book.

The add stated, " Brand new first printing hb with dj per image above, no marks or signs of use, just a hint of shelf wear" however, when I opened the book it had the name "brad" written on the inside and the letter "B" written on the inside of the dust jacket. As for "just a hint of shelf wear", I would say that this has a little more than just a hint, but I must be honest and say that I am a bit critical of the dust jacket because I am buying this for collector purposes. I am just planning on buying a brand new book and donating this one to my local library.

A Favorite Book of Mine

A wonderful autobiography of a kind and humble man. I remember his simple delight in eating a roasted onion from his grandmothers fire pit. I read this book in 1978 and thanks to Amazon, I can buy another copy to give to a friend 35 years later.

About the Author
Yoram Koren is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Paul G. Goebel Professor of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, as well as the Director of the NSF Engineering Research Center for Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems. He has won many awards, including, most recently, the Stephen S. Attwood Award from the University of Michigan College of Engineering, 2008, and the Gold Medal from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, 2007.

Excellent book about global manufacturing in 21st century

It is an excellent book about global manufacturing. Very insightful and useful. It talks about what manufacturing enterprises should do in order to succeed in the 21st Century. It also discusses how manufacturing enterprises should deploy globalization strategies that include issues such as fitting the product to the region where it intends to be sold, selecting the best manufacturing configurations to enhance productivity, and optimizing the location of factories. It includes the following topics: Globalization and Manufacturing Paradigms, Product Invention Strategy, Customized, Personalized, Reconfigurable Products, Mass Production Models, Analysis of Mass Customization, Traditional Manufacturing Systems, Economics of Manufacturing Systems, Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems and System Configuration Analysis, Responsive Business Models for Global Manufacturing, Enterprises Enterprise Globalization Strategies, Where Are Manufacturing Enterprises Headed?

This book also includes many numerical examples as well as the homework assignments.
