An interesting look at fascinating, and foreign, ideas

This book has two goals: one is defining the field of ``ethnomathematics'', the second is legitimizing the field by giving examples of what it might cover. This is more anthropology than mathematics, but would still appeal to a fan of Martin Gardner.
Memorable topics: the Inuit view of space, a sort of ethnotopology; navigation among the Polynesian islanders (how *do* they steer those tiny boats across five hundred miles of open ocean and arrive at an island a half-mile across? --- this chapter is simply amazing!); deciphering the code of the quipu (the knotted strings that formed the accounting records of the Incan Empire).

About the Author
Philip J. Adler taught college courses in world history to undergraduates for almost thirty years prior to his recent retirement. Dr. Adler earned his Ph.D. at the University of Vienna following military service overseas in the 1950s. His dissertation was on the activity of the South Slav emigres during World War I, and his academic specialty was the modern history of Eastern Europe and the Austro-Hungarian empire. His research has been supported by Fulbright and the National Endowment for the Humanities grants. Dr. Adler has published widely in the historical journals of the U.S. and German-speaking Europe. He is currently professor emeritus at East Carolina University, where he spent most of his teaching career.

Randall L. Pouwels earned his B.A. in history at the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. in history at UCLA. His Ph.D. dissertation was on the history of Islam in East Africa. His book, HORN AND CRESCENT: CULTURAL CHANGE AND TRADITIONAL ISLAM ON THE EAST AFRICAN COAST, 800-1900 (Cambridge, 1987), has become a standard work in African history. THE HISTORY OF ISLAM IN AFRICA (Athens, Oxford, and Cape Town, 2000) was jointly edited with Nehemia Levtzion of Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Widely praised in reviews, it was selected by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2001 and was made a selection of the History Book Club. In addition, he has written numerous articles and reviews on East African history, the history of Islam in Africa, and historical methodologies. Dr. Pouwels's other research interests include the history of the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, and the history and archaeology of Native Americans. Over the years, his work has been supported by grants and fellowships from Fulbright-Hays, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Studies Research Council, the National Geographic Society, and the American Philosophical Society. He taught African history for over twenty years at LaTrobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and at UCLA. He has been the Professor of African and Middle Eastern History at the University of Central Arkansas since 1984.

World Civilizations

This text is meant to be the backbone reading material in a standard college-level introduction to world history. It is aimed especially at the student encountering the more exotic elements and areas of civilization for the first time, and particularly in junior and community college courses. It has been written from the beginning with such students in mind, and is uniquely equipped with pedagogic devices meant to aid these persons grasp the interrelations among world civilizations. Chapters are keyed to class lecture coverage, with strong emphasis on social and cultural trends and events. Proportionately more space is given to nonwestern peoples than any other text on the market.

Excellent Survey Text for Global View

Adler's World Civilizations is an excellent introductory survey text. The language is pleasant without being banal. Most importantly the text gives attention to a worldview that shows history globally instead of through the Western tinted glasses our texts in High school usually did.

Great for a general reference of history and geography.

I picked this up at a library used book sale of donated items. I paid zero for it as it was used and not many people want these large textbooks around the house.

But after paging through the book it really is very nicely arranged with chapters very logically presented with enough, but not an overwhelming amount of of text to slog through until the next heading appears. I find it very appealing visually with a great balance of maps (nice ones), photos and side panels. This is a book I would have considered keeping after using it in a class.

Sometimes its just nice to reach for a book to read about some battle or treaty or geographic region without using the internet to learn something.

In my case, it will be used for filling in historical periods which I might be curious about. It would be worth a few dollars but I can't say more than $20 for a reference work.

Great tool for Beginning Students of History

How do you research and write about history? This is always a good question for history students. At what point do you put away the MLA methods and begin to work with historical style in order to conduct research within this discipline? Benjamin has compiled a good book on what students should be doing in order to become historians. One of the tasks instructors face in college is transforming students into historians. That is what they are doing in those classes. They are learning to think like a historian in order to find and use facts in developing interpretations of the past.

There are many books on the market concerning how to be a historian. This book is one of the better ones. It is used on college campuses for students. Everything a beginning student of history needs is in this book. Good attention is paid to the research and writing elements of history which are critical for a historian. Sections on what historians do and why are included which is wonderful because some instructors do not bother to explain these things. Two appendices are included with sources for beginning historians which is worth the price of the book alone. So often budding historians are hesitant to start because they have no idea where to look for information. As Benjamin points out, often it is right under our nose.

All in all this is a good book for students of history to have. When coupled with the latest edition of Turabian’s A Manual for Writers, the pair become a highly effective duo for all historians.

All stars for subject. There is so little else were about manhood.

A very good inside and analysis of the different aspects of man life.
Also bunch of good suggestions on how to improove certain areas. I like the chapter about relations to father and job passion.
Sexuality has a very good analysis on different paths. However if You struggle here You will only acknowledge You are on wrong path. Don’t expect any serious advices how to change and what to do.

On the downside, to me it seems to be a bit naive a major manifesto to take advice and example from older generations. They are either too little experienced on different life paths (as of individuals) or lost and confused by themselves and with a lot of grief.

In “Wilde Spirit” chapter I rather found there some nonsense on man’s initiation. Expecting more to find advices how to compensate man’s conquer and discovery capability/need throughout life.

A BIG missing part is middle life crisis so much present in manhood.

Summarizing – an essential book on topic.
But still waiting on title with more full picture and collective experience.

I'm no sociologist

I'm no sociologist - but I know that Steve Biddulph strikes a deep chord. He gives an enlightened view on men and our relatively poor understanding of our role in life, sexuality and our relationships.

As a father with a son of my own, the issues he raises about growing up and coming of age have been very valuable to me in understanding what's happening with my son (and myself). The book encouraged me to think about my father, my brothers, my good friends in a very positive and constructive light. The writing has good strong humour yet it pulls no punches.

There's too little good literature on fatherhood to miss this one.

Confronting, Liberating - and a great journey!

While walking through a bookshop one day 15 years ago, for no real reason at all this book found its way into my hand. As I read the back cover it twigged a mild interest in me that I couldn't ignore.

The next 2 days were spent reading and contemplating the messages, stories and collective wisdom that Steve has expertly put together. The words of elders such as Robert Bly and Sam Keen resonated something in my masculinity that had not previously been tapped into at anything more than a superficial level. I laughed, cried and pondered the man I wanted to be -I was hooked.

Needless to say, I have revisited this book many times since then, each time gaining new insight into myself and my relationships with others. This book is for men who want to take an honest journey into their strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities and opportunities for their future. Don't be surprised if you feel compelled to pass this onto other men you know, or to your partner.

Take from this book what works for you - what you don't find helpful today may just grab you next month, next year, or even further into your future.

Dr. Gary A. Porter earned his M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado. Throughout his career, Dr. Porter has taught at several universities, including San Diego State; Loyola University Chicago; and the University of Montana. He has also served as a department chair. He is currently Distinguished Lecturer at Drake University. Widely published and the recipient of numerous teaching awards, Dr. Porter has conducted workshops on introductory accounting education and corporate financial reporting, has worked as a staff accountant with Deloitte & Touche, and has actively served the Illinois CPA Society, American Accounting Association, and Financial Executives International.

Dr. Curtis L. Norton received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University and an M.B.A. from the University of South Dakota. He is currently Clinical Professor of Accounting at Arizona State University. As Professor of Accounting at Northern Illinois University for more than 30 years, Dr. Norton earned the University Excellence Teaching Award and has published in The Accounting Review, The Journal of Accounting Education, CPA Journal, and many other professional journals. A member of the American Accounting Association and Financial Executives International, he also consults and conducts training for private and governmental authorities, banks, and utilities.
