There is likely no team in Americans sports more loathed than the Dallas Cowboys. The antics of their players and coaches, their crass showmanship, their contemptible pride, make them a worthy target of our scorn. For the first time ever, a collection of essays will give voice to what America thinks of the Dallas Cowboys. Bert Randolph Sugar, whom The New Yorker called "the best kibitzer in New York," has brought together a noted list of contributors who share our contempt. Here's a taste of their distaste. "I doubt if Jerry Jones can even spell tradition."--Chet Coppock, The Voice of Chicago. I Hate the Dallas Cowboys will be a crisp invective that is sure to make headlines and sure to make us laugh.

From Publishers Weekly
If syndicated sportswriter Sugar had wielded his blue pencil more judiciously, this anthology would have been improved. With articles by 10 top writers like Jim Murray, Budd Schulberg and Skip Bayless and 10 top ex-players like Mercury Morris, Jerry Kramer and Greg Buttle, the book could have been exceptional if some of the contributors had not been allowed to ride their personal hobby-horses. Two of the former gridders included are Cowboy haters (because, the reader suspects, they were never chosen to play in Dallas). And several contributors argue that the Cowboys' appropriation of the sobriquet "America's Team" is wrong because other teams are more deserving of that designation: among the nominees are the Redskins, Steelers, Eagles, Packers, Bills and Bears. But those not pursuing a personal agenda agree that the image of the Dallas team has altered considerably since it began--it has gone downhill. While in the past the Cowboys were thought to present a picture of hard-hitting but ethical players, today, with arrogant drug users dominating, a few essayists suggest that the title "South America's Team" is more accurate. Buttle, Morris, Murray and Schulberg stand out, but otherwise the book is a disappointment. Illustrations not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Sportswriter Sugar (The Sports 100, Carol Pub. Group, 1997) has assembled 20 essays and a cartoon by a group of writers and erstwhile athletes. The latter include NFL luminaries such as Mercury Morris, Greg Buttle, and Conrad Dobler. The main thrust of their diatribes against the Dallas team is that their own teams were denied so many victories (even Super Bowls) by the "Boys." Most of the writers are sports columnists in cities with teams that have been likewise deprived. They rant about everything from the coaches to the cheerleaders to the city of Dallas itself. Mostly, it's good-natured ribbing, though, and more than a little grudging respect shines through. Sugar's witty introduction is the best part. The rest of the essays are uneven. An optional purchase for most public libraries.?Will Hepfer, SUNY at Buffalo Libs.

A review from someone who has at least read the book first
By eclecticdude
It is obvious from reading the lower rated reviews that the individuals found the title on a search and wrote the review without reading it. Big mistake, guys. Bert Sugar is the editor, not the author. The book does collect various essays from people from both former athletes and from sports writers. Some of the essays do come off as rather dull. Most are intersting reads. There is even a short piece to accompany the cartoon of the real Americas Team, drawn by Bill Gallo, with the real team consisting of the Duke and a handful of other Western heroes. Bill Conlin, a journalist for a Philadelphia paper spends almost as much time ragging on his "Iggles" (Eagles) as he does the Cowboys. Skip Bayless, a veteran of Dallas newspapers, is one of the better writers here. Also interesting is Thom Loverro's imagined future of 2097, wherein a father tries to explain the fall of America caused by the now extinct Dallas Cowboys. Hilarious! Beware, Cowboy haters! The true origin of the "America's Taam" will defeat a myth held by haters for decades.

Very Entertaining
By A Customer
As webmaster of 49ersFan.Net, I ordered several books for Christmas gifts this year. Among them was this book. When it arrived, I thumbed through it and couldn't put it down. Needless to say I kept a copy for myself. There are reflections and comments from many "professional" Cowboy's haters such as Skip Bayless (former Dallas beat-writer), Steve Bartkowski (former Falcons QB), and many other NFL players and personalities. What I found most fascinating were the comparisons between today's Cowboy juveniles, and the personalities of the past! I thought the "old" Cowboys had a pretty good reputation but apparently I was WRONG! For those who truely hate the Cowboys, this book is EXCELLENT! Very entertaining and a great buy!

This is a well informed and organized book.

I feel that Mr. Sugar has done what a lot of long time fans have been wanting to do. Write a book informing the General public of what the Cowboys are all about. They have been around with an attitude for long enough. Mr. Sugar has compiled essays laying out specific excusses to hate the Cowboys. There are a couple of them that are for the cowboys. This is a well balanced book. It is suggested reading for all fans who love to hate the worst team ever.

Saxon does it again!
By A Customer
I used the Saxon books through all of my High school math courses, and think they are *the* best way to learn algebra and higher math. The key to the success is really twofold. 1) New types of problems are introduced with every lesson - but these are not drilled into the student by giving them 20 or more "practice problems" to do. Instead, only about 5 of the "new" problems are given for practice - letting the new ideas "sink in" over a period of days. 2) Constant review. Because the student is not burdened with lots of new ideas every lesson, the remaining homework problems are review of everything the student has done to date. This ensures that the student doesn't forget how to do the math, and makes reviewing for a test almost obsolete.
I am now in graduate school, soon to get my PhD in theoretical biophysics. Learning math so well in high school put me far ahead in college. I also tutor out of the Saxon books (and others, depending on which schools the kids attend), and the Saxon kids are far ahead of the others in terms of retention and understanding.
This book covers beginning calculus without labelling it as such so the students aren't scared off. Ah! Another clever ploy to get students to learn the "hard" stuff!

Excellence in Mathematics
By L. Strube
I have been using Saxon mathematics for 15 years, first as a 5th-12th grade student and more recently as a tutor. This program is excellent and like one of the other reviewers I can agree that even my "average" Saxon students have significantly better mathematics skills that those students using other programs.

I began using Saxon math in 5th grade. Prior to that I used a typical "learn and drill" method. A new concept was taught and drilled for 20+ problems and then the instruction moved on to another topic. By the time I reached an end of unit exam I had forgotten the early material.

Then in 5th grade we changed curriculums. I didn't become a "math lover" overnight. In fact, although my math skills improved, I adamently hated math all the way through junior high. Then I began algebra. By the end of Saxon's algebra 2 textbook I loved algebra and was making high A's in my homework.

A couple of years after highschool I was invited to begin tutoring math at a private school. At this point I reviewed my Saxon Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 eventually going on to study Advanced Mathematics for the fun of it. I would spend 2-3 hours a day studying math and loving every minute of it.

This independant study was 2 1/2 years ago. I recently decided to attend college as a math major. Last semester I passed Calculus I near or at the top of all the Cal I classes combined. My Saxon skills gave me the tools I needed to study well and grasp rather abstract concepts.

The one area that has concerned me is trigonometry. The Advanced Mathematics covered the topic quite thoroughly, however Calculus requires a lot of trig and it has been so long since I studied Advanced Math I've been afraid my professors will "spring" something on me I don't remember.

Yesterday my fears were alleviated. The math department held an extra credit exam for the Cal 2 students. The exam was a trig placement exam they would like to implement in the future. Because of my other classes I didn't have time to study so I decided to "wing" it and hope my studies 2 1/2 years ago would award me at least partial credit.

I'm quite pleased to say that thanks to Saxon I knew how to work every single problem on the test even though it has been 2 1/2 years since I studied trigonometry and I have not had any trig students since that time. Saxon works... Excellently.

If you are considering the Saxon texts let me encourage you to read the introductions to the texts. They are quite inspiring, imparting the vision Saxon had for math.

In addition students must work every problem. This is the whole reason Saxon works -- lots and lots of review. What most people fail to realize is that mathematics is like music; practice creates excellence.

Finally for those concerned about Saxon's lack of a dedicated geometry text, after having tutored math for 5 years I am convinced that Saxon's integrated approach is far more effective than traditional methods. Saxon teaches geometry concepts throughout the junior high and high school grades allowing for mastery of the ideas long before the formal proofs are introduced in Advanced Mathematics. This is excellent as I believe that older students have a greater capacity to grasp the rather abstract skills required for geometric proofs.

I'm very thankful for the curriculum switch in 5th grade. Because of Saxon I have transformed from a math-hating elementary student to a very succesful math major.

Advanced means advanced!
By Tyler T. Kutz
I used this book for my Junior and Senior year in high school. Even though I spread it out over two years (something they recommend you do, depending on your circumstances), I didn't find it slow at all. It teaches many challenging math concepts that are quite advanced (hence the name). I took a pre-calculus course from a community college my senior year, and at least 90% of the material in the college course had already been covered in the Advanced Math book.

On a side note, a lot of the word problems in this book are quite amusing.

From the Author
My favorite quote these days is from 19th century French novelist Emile Zola: "I am an artist ... I am here to live out loud."

This is the very antithesis of my girlhood, growing up in the Deep South. Young ladies in my time were expected to be polite and compliant. If we were tempted to rebel against the conforming strictures, there were velvet gloved fists (literal and figurative) to keep us quiet and in our place. And that was only 50 years ago!

I have always believed that life is an art form. While we may not always be able to choose our experiences, we are always able to choose our interpretation of them. It has taken me the better part of those decades to unleash myself from those bindings of blind duty, tradition, expectations and patriarchal control. Writing this memoir has, I believe, cast the last of them away. Today, I am happy to say, I am living loud and loving every creative, artful moment of it.

I invite you to follow my blog, Ramblings from the Mountain. Bring along a cup of great java. Life is good.

What readers are saying about Risking Everything: Coming Out in Coffee Land.

"Yes, there's life after 50! A wonderful story of falling in love, falling out of love, heartache and personal growth. A book that gives you hope and joy, and tells you all you ever wanted to know about making major mid-life changes, Risking Everything: Coming Out In Coffee Land is the real deal! Enjoy!" ~ Nancie Wilson, NC

"An unflinching and honest recollection of a life lived authentically. Humorous, angry, touching and provocative, it provides an intimate look into the life of a typically conventional, over-achieving professional American woman of the Boomer Generation. Skillful and beautifully descriptive. A celebration of life and the courage required to live it!"~ Louise Orr, Panama

"I don't think you could have presented a story with more integrity. I was left feeling "whoosh!" Clean and clear. My glass is raised to you!"~ Katherine Macomber Millman, WA

About the Author
Elizabeth Worley grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where she wandered the misty hills, found where the wild ginseng grew, and dreamed a future of unlimited possibility. Somewhere along the way, she lost herself. Then, like Alice in Wonderland, one day she woke, as from a dream, to wonder: "Where am I? Who am I? Why am I?" Today, Worley lives in the central highlands of the Republic of Panama, where she grows organic coffee and medicinal herbs, talks to her chickens, feeds a feral cat, and shares life with her amazing partner, Dianne.

A Love Story
By Jim Fletcher
The author sets up the book beautifully. I was impressed with the way the book began and led us into her life. The ending was also done well with an excellent closing and a lovely final photograph of the gift symbolizing her new-found love. The internal structure was not as finely crafted as the opening and ending. However, descriptions of emotions are intense and meaningful. The author's pain or joy--and love--leaps out of the pages. I had not expected a love story, and that is the essence of "Risking Everything". Indeed, the story itself has similarities to Isak Dinesen's "Out of Africa"; a woman ventures to a new country and begins a coffee plantation in the midst of a dissolving marriage and encounters love. "Risking Everything" would make an excellent movie.

A Courageous Story
By John Earle, "Waking Up Learning What Your Life is Tryng to Teach You"
When Dona Maria, considered the patron saint of Cuzco in Ecuador, was asked, "What would your message to the world be?" she responded. "Disclose yourselves and expand the collective Mesa."

Elizabeth Worley's book is many things: a tale of personal transition, a tale of life in Panama, a tale of coffee, of painful relationship, of family, a tale of love and an honest look at her own sexual discovery (all well told). But the book's most salient quality, and the one that makes the it ring with truth, is Worley's vulnerability. She fully "discloses" herself. In a courageous manner, she speaks to any of us, straight or gay, determined to make significant change in our lives, to those who want to follow the heart, but are afraid. And, despite betrayal and hardship she shows no bitterness, and has clearly kept her sense of humor, joy and deep appreciation of life alive. In this way, we know her journey was not just one of personal growth and change but was spiritual as well. Despite the many personal challenges she encountered, she kept her heart opened and went for kindness and understanding.

Elizabeth Worley is a heroine, the person who goes into the unknown and comes back with a gift for the rest us. By disclosing herself, she has expanded the collective mesa. She has broken through barriers of separation and difference so often erected around sexual preference, and she has illuminated a path into a more accepting, compassionate and kinder world.

Switching gears in Panama
By Mariah & Byron Edgington
A well written fun read. Ms Worley will have you covering your eyes saying, "No, don't do it!" But she weaves a good story throughout. The book is chock full of info about the challenges of life as an expat in Panama. Enjoy!
