About the Author
With a Ph.D. from Purdue University, Jean Dickey has been involved in teaching introductory biology labs since 1978. Her experience includes developing an investigative laboratory curriculum for a large enrollment non-majors course at Clemson University, as well as supervising TAs and lab preparations. Besides working with general biology students, she also teaches life science for elementary education majors. When Dr. Dickey is not with her students, daughters Katherine and Jessica keep her busy.

Reece has an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. She taught biology at Middlesex County College and Queensborough Community College.

Four stars because I don't like chemistry. But that's only one chapter. I got this book for my Bio class in college. It looks interesting and I'm looking forward to learning more. This loose leaf edition comes in a 3 ring binder and is cheaper than the others. But it is heavy!

Simple yet deep learning at the same time

I love the doodle graphics in "The Remedy". They add so much to the book and bring the learning points out so the concepts are easy to grasp. This is one of the first books I've read that deals with Lean outside of Manufacturing and with the issues Lean faces with implementation in the rest of the enterprise. Pascal does this in a way that is both simple and deep at the same time. He has a way of making the characters seem so lifelike that their stories become part of the leassons learned not a distraction from them.

The practical side of Lean Thinking

We have been teaching Lean Thinking in our business for 2 years now, and while we are using it on each project where possible, we have struggled to understand what the steps are to engage the whole organisation so that we can turn it into the company we know it can be. "The Remedy" is the closest thing I have come across that really describes the challenges we face, and offers a prescriptive step by step method to address those challenges. I am about to try Dennis' methods this week, so it's early days, but this for me was the missing information I needed to make a company-wide transition seem possible. I have recommended the book to all of my colleagues in consulting. I believe it sets a new standard.

A Great Explanation of Lean Thinking

This book does a great job of explaining a very broad variety of topics related to the Lean quality improvement philosophy. It is filled with helpful doodled illustrations and is very quick and easy to read. None of the topics is covered in depth, but the book does a good job of indicating just how deep each topic goes and how much more there is to learn than what can be covered in the book.
The book tells the story of a fictional auto plant manager who has transformed his plant with Lean thinking and now has to spread the philosophy to the other parts of the enterprise. Dr. Bruce M. Whitehead is a NAESP Nationally Distinguished Principal and has served for over thirty years as a principal for School District # 4 in Missoula, Montana. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Montana. His career includes appointments to numerous national and international committees as well as becoming President of the Montana Association of Elementary School Principals and the Montana State Reading Association. He also served as Chairman of Montana’s first Governor’s Task Force on Technology as well as being an NCATE Advisor. As a co-author of 10 books and numerous articles in the field of education, Dr. Whitehead is a recipient of the University of Montana’s highest honor, The Montana Distinguished Alumni Award. Additional honors include: The International Reading Association’s Presidential Service Award, NASA Explorer Schools Leadership Award, National Milken Foundation’s Outstanding Educator Award, John F. Kennedy Center’s Award for Arts in Education, Outstanding Contributions to Saudi Arabian Education, and Japan’s International Soroban Institute Award.

Dr. Floyd Boschee has an extensive background in teaching and educational administration. He served as a teacher, coach, and school administrator in the public schools and as a professor and chairman of departments of education at the collegiate level. Dr. Boschee is professor emeritus in the Division of Educational Administration, School of Education, at the University of South Dakota and a former school board member of the Vermillion School District, Vermillion, South Dakota. During his tenure as a university professor, he consulted with school districts on reorganization; published numerous articles in major educational journals; and conducted workshops on curriculum development and implementation, the teaching and learning process, and school administrator evaluations. He is the author or coauthor of 13 books in the fields of school administration and curriculum and instruction.

A good all-in-one reference manual (of sorts) for people interested in integrating technology into their curriculum, district, or even just their lessons. The only drawback is that, like many things tech related, portions of this book will soon be out of date. An online companion reference that could be continuously updated would have been good.

Wonderful book

This is a very accessible and efficient anatomy book and what I would recommend first to any medical students. I find class and lab much easier if I first read the BRS book and try to get a basic overview. The biggest strength of this book is a review that helps integrate muscles, nerves, vessels, and actions, while also giving clinical correlates.

About the Author
Bernard Goffinet completed his Ph.D. at the University of Alberta, Canada. As a research associate of Dr A. J. Shaw he pursued his interest in the phylogeny of mosses, with a special focus on the evolution of entomophily in the dung mosses. He joined the University of Connecticut in 1999, where he is an associate professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He has co-authored nearly 70 publications. His current research spans choroplast genome evolution in liverworts, the phylogenetic history of the new model taxon, Physcomitrella patens, as well as the evolution of multisymbiosis in lichen-forming fungi.

A. Jonathan Shaw earned his Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Michigan. He was a Post-doctoral Associate at the Natural History Museum, Smithsonian Institution and in the Department of Botany, Duke University, before taking a faculty position in the Biology Department of Ithaca College in 1989. In 1996 he joined the Botany Department (now Biology) at Duke University, where he is currently a Professor. He serves as an Associate Editor for several scientific journals and as Chairman for the Board of Directors, Highlands Biological Station. He has published over 130 scientific papers and book chapters. His research interests include the systematics and phylogenetics of mosses and liverworts and population genetics of peat mosses (Sphagnum).

Excellent for beginners

This book is one of the best written ones. It covers everything. I own the 1986 edition. It contains everything you need top understand the nature of the fluid flow past a body.It covers airfoils, finite wing, compressible and incompressible flows, shock waves, boundary layers, turbulence. It doesn't mention complex variable methods and Joukowsky transformation, it is true, but it does a very good job in the other tasks. Personally, I think everyone involved in aerodynamics should own it. It is a good introductory to mid-level book as a reference one.

Excellent for beginners ,but

A well written introductory book on aerodynamics . Advanced printing technology also adds to the book`s qualities .However , this is not the book for someone who wants to excel at aerodynamics .Like other more recent books ,It aims for medicore level.For example, there are no expansions of advanced topics for the curious student.Also a subject of practical and historical importance like complex potential & conformal mapping is omitted. Summary : If you are new to Fluid Dynamics ,buy it .If you intend to be a real scientist ,you should look for Karamcheti for the incompressible part ,and Shapiro for the compressible part.

Why not try...

Although significantly older than this text, I would suggest that readers look for a copy of 'The Aerodynamic Design of Aircraft' by Dietrich Kuchemann (Pergamon, 1976). Although not particularly up to date in terms of the advent of complex CFD methods, Kuchemann's text is an essential summary of the progress of analytical aerodynamics, and it's experimental underpinnings, from Gottingen in the Ludwig Prandtl era, through to the technology of the mid 1970s.

A brilliant and accessible analysis

Aside from Lenin's own works, this is by far the most comprehensive and accessible (but not dumbed down!) book I've read on Lenin and the development of Russian social democracy. (Though if you're looking for something by Lenin himself, What Is To Be Done is probably the most concise book on social democratic organization in the midst of an autocracy.)

This book goes through the conditions in Tsarist Russia, and explores how they changed, shaping a history that Lenin spent his life organizing for democracy in the context of. So rather than an abstract version of what he said and did, this book traces the development of revolutionary social democratic theory in Russia and how it merged with the working class, at points splitting into various factions and parties because of differences in principals (not petty tactics), and then eventually how it went on to lead the almost revolution of 1905 followed by the revolution of 1917. This book also takes on the heavily debated question of whether Lenin was actually a Marxist. It begins with a chapter on authentic Leninism, and continuing throughout the book, continues to show his interpretations and adaptations of Marxism with an extremely effective use of quotes.

Lastly, this book is a political and historical defense of Lenin and Leninism, which works to correct the misinterpretations of all of his quotes that have been completely taken out of context. It does an excellent job without being dogmatic, and also includes a chapter on problems with Leninism. But it is the most effective defense of Lenin I've ever encountered.

Trotskyist reading of Lenin and Bolshevik organization

"Lenin and the Revolutionary Party" dates from 1990 and was the first monograph by Paul Le Blanc (La Roche College, Pittsburgh, PA). Yet the question of the relationship between Lenin's thought, the organizational aspects and evolution of the Bolshevik current in czarist Russia, and the relative success of the Russian Revolution compared to similar attempts in other countries is one that does not go away in 1, 10, or 100 years. Many scholars from left to right have contributed to the now immense bibliography on Lenin's thought and actions, but not many of them have bothered to take Lenin's own ideas on Bolshevik organization and the detailed context in which they evolved seriously. Le Blanc's book must therefore be read as trying to go beyond the fashionable demonization of Lenin as an inherently tyrannical, dictatorial, single-minded, intolerant, anti-democratic etc. etc. figure, especially when it comes to his ideas on the 'vanguard party' and its significance for the revolution. This he does well, and no-one in good faith can read this book and emerge believing in the idea of Lenin as someone with no interest in party discussions or substantially democratic decision-making. Similarly, the hoary old myth of Lenin as the fanatic, who wanted to substitute for the working class a small group of elite intellectuals and in so doing managed to somehow conjure up a revolution in 1917, is demolished as well.

The work is strong on contextualizing Lenin's theoretical and organizational writings, and in demonstrating the many twists and turns of his positions vis-á-vis those of other major figures in the Russian Social-Democratic movement (as it was then called): people like Zinoviev, Trotsky, Martov, Bogdanov, and so forth. However, the book also has some clear and persistent problems. These relate mainly to the dogmatically Trotskyist interpretation of events. Le Blanc has stated elsewhere that "[he has] always considered "Trotskyism" as the same as revolutionary socialism, associated with some of the most useful ideas and most inspiring traditions that ever existed". It is from that perspective and that one only that the entire narrative is presented. While this is not at all inherently invalid, as especially Soviet historiography is riddled with explicitly liberal or conservative readings masquerading as the voice of scientific neutrality, it does have its downsides. The first is the strongly hagiographical character of the work: there is in the entire book not a single case where Lenin is substantially seen as having been in the wrong, and while this may be justifiable on its own, it seems somewhat contradictory to the conclusion in the final chapter, where the later 'degeneration' of the USSR is presented as the result of Lenin's 'retreat' from socialism in 1921. Lenin was by all means a blunt and honest man, and made no effort to disguise the NEP, the repressive period of War Communism, and the bureaucratization of society as essential defeats for socialism. But this raises the question how such defeats can result from a correct analysis of events, as Lenin is held to always have had. This is an issue carefully avoided by Le Blanc. Similarly, the frequent quotations from Trotsky and the sneers at Stalin are but the mirror image of the Stalinist style of writing at the expense of political opponents (even in battles of long ago), and are equally annoying and historiographically unacceptable - especially when, for example, Trotsky's polemic "The Stalin School of Falsification" is quoted multiple times, without comment, as if it were a generally accepted historical source! Such methods cannot but mislead the unwary and irritate the informed readership.

Finally, and this is less Le Blanc's fault but more the consequence of the book being from 1990, the bibliographical source material is somewhat limited. The emphasis is strongly on quotations, which is effective to get an impression of the political debates at the time, but the book could not benefit from the vast multiplication of excellent social-historical scholarship on pre- and post-revolutionary Russia of the last 20 years. The book also seems to retread much of the same ground covered in more encyclopedic depth by Neil Harding in his excellent "Lenin's Political Thought" (Lenin's Political Thought: Theory and Practice in the Democratic and Socialist Revolutions), as well as Alexander Rabinowitch's detailed "The Bolsheviks Come to Power" (The Bolsheviks Come to Power: The Revolution of 1917 in Petrograd). Le Blanc does indicate he has some differences with them, and his emphasis is more precisely on organizational questions, so this is not illegitimate by any means, but it would have been interesting for the more experienced reader on these subjects to have more historical discussion of the extensive material on the same field by other scholars. As it stands, one does not get a good 'feel' for the established contemporary history-writing on the subject, and that is always a bit dangerous when it comes to politically fraught topics.

That said, if one reads it as the authoritative Trotskyist view of Lenin and the problem of party organization in Russia, it is readable and sound for its purpose. It makes a good addition to a library of works on the Russian Revolution, but is not to be used as the only work on the subject.

Paul Le Blanc's fine study flies in the face of those who have continued to present Leninism as an 'elitist,' 'authoritarian' sect of revolutionary intellectuals who sought to gain control over a peasant population by any means avaiable. Le Blanc presents a highly detailed, nuanced account of the Bolshevik's rise to power in 1917- and a remarkably complex picture of Lenin and Trotsky emerges, namely as links in the chain of a truly democratic and organized revolution. Lenin's dialectic approach to social transformation embodied a principled commitment to Marxism, while at the same time he allowed for flexibility in tactics. As a result of the Bolshevik's commitment to a revolutionary working class movement, paired with his political ability to measure the level of political development amidst a changing and tumultuous of landscape, the Bolsheviks were eventually successful in ceasing power over the bourgeois Menshiviks. Le Blanc also provides succinct explanations of the multiple left-wing criticisms of Leninism, and is able to demonstrate why they ultimately fail to accurately assess the inner dynamics and contradictions that constituted the Russian Revolution. This volume is one of the best accounts currently in print.
