Mert Caliskan

Mert Caliskan is a software stylist living in Ankara, Turkey. He has more than 10 years of expertise in software development with the architectural design of Enterprise Java web applications. He is an advocate of open source for software projects such as PrimeFaces and has also been a committer and founder of various others. He is the coauthor of the first edition of this book. He is also the coauthor of Beginning Spring by Wiley Publications. He is the founder of AnkaraJUG, which is the most active JUG in Turkey that has been having monthly meetups for 3 years now. In 2014, he was entitled a Java Champion for his achievements. He is also a Sun Certified Java professional since 2007. He does part-time lecturing at Hacettepe University on enterprise web application architecture and web services. Oleg Varaksin

Oleg Varaksin is a senior software engineer living in the Black Forest, Germany. He is a graduate computer scientist who studied informatics at Russian and German universities. His main occupation and "daily bread" in the last 10 years has consisted of building various web applications based on JSP, JSF, CDI, Spring, web services, REST, jQuery, AngularJS, and HTML5. He has a deep understanding of web usability and accessibility. Oleg is an experienced JSF expert and has been working with the PrimeFaces library since its beginning in 2009. He is also a well-known member of the PrimeFaces community and a cocreator of the PrimeFaces Extensions project on additional JSF components for PrimeFaces. Besides the aforementioned technologies, he has worked as a frontend developer with many other web and JavaScript frameworks―Struts, GWT, Prototype, YUI library, and so on. A great book !!!

I recommend this book to anyone who is engaged (or plan to be) in implementing a JSF project and wants to take advantage of PrimeFaces' fast-paced development edge. Though PrimeFaces is a powerful library on JSF which allows you to greatly speed up your web project development compared to other technologies, it involves high abstraction so you need a good sidekick (book) in order to beat your project's challenges. In my case, I wanted to get both a grasp on PrimeFaces and also a step-by-step walk-through on how to solve some complex situations (Chapter 10 Advanced Use Cases: a MUST !!!). Chapter 5 clearly explains essentials such as: sorting, listing, and visualizing data by using data iteration components. The book's GitHub allows you to build and run its projects in a snap of finger all at once ! If you actually want to take full advantage of this book you need to have some understanding on JSF, jQuery, CSS, and HTML.

Excellent book.

Excellent book... much more polished than the first edition,
and a real-must for any PrimeFaces developer.

If you are already a PrimeFaces developer, the Chapter 11 with Advanced use cases is extremely useful.
It is basically a compilation of the most frequent problems and challenges discussed in the PrimeFaces Forum,
so you don't need to spend hours browsing the forum looking for solutions.

I found one drawback in this second edition though...
In the first edition, there was a chapter about how to extend PrimeFaces with your own components.
However the second edition is missing such a chapter... which I think would still be useful, specially for PF 5.x

In any case, this is a must book for any PrimeFaces developer.

Looking for the third edition, hopefully with more challenging Advance Use Cases ...!

Must have for Primefaces user

The first chapter starts with how to setup PrimeFaces and the basics, how the PrimeFaces AJAX mechanism works and the internationalization configuration. The next chapter show how to configure, change and create new themes with jQuery themeroller and css. The next chapters group the PrimeFaces components into specific topics. Inputs like input fields (with and without auto completion), spinner, slider and editor components. Grouping elements with PrimeFaces grid system and panels. How to present and visualize data with tables, charts and maps. Every topic with ready to use recipes.

In my opinion this book is an excellent and practical book which will help you to solve a lot of common problems.

About the Author
Makoto Shinkai is a Japanese film director, animator, and writer. A native of the Nagano prefecture in Japan, he studied Japanese literature at Chuo University. He traces his passion for creation to the manga, anime, and novels he was exposed to while in middle school. Considered one of the best animators in the world today, he is often called the "next-Miyazaki". Shinkai developed his abilities as a video game designer for FalCom, where he worked on the cult-classic role-playing game Y"S. Shinkai is unique as an animator as he cut his teeth by producing almost all elements many of his works - from animation to music composition to voice acting. He has won numerous awards: 12th DoGA CG Animation Award; 1st New Tokyo International Animation FestivalGrand Prize; 7th Kobe Animation Prize; 6th Japanese Media Art; Awardfor Digital Media; 34th Nebula Award(World Con); 59th Mainichi Films Animation Prize; 2007 Asia Pacific Film Award; and theLancia Platinum Grand Prize (Italy).

Exceptionally beautiful

I've actually reviewed the original Japanese edition 新海誠美術作品集 空の記憶 ~ The sky of the longing for memories ~ which was published in 2008. Publisher Vertical Comics has provided a huge fan service by translating the book into English. It's certainly worth translating and more people should get to see this book.

The only difference I noticed is the lack of dust jacket. Even the paper used is the low gloss type. Colours are reproduced wonderfully.

A Sky Longing for Memories: The Art of Makoto Shinkai is the artbook that collects the background art for 5 Centimeters Per Second, The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Voices from a Distant Star.

I've watched those three anime films many years ago and can't really remember what the stories were about. But one thing that I cannot forget is the beautiful background art in those films.

The commentary provides talks about the design aspect of each scene and it's really insightful. Now that all the text has been translated to English, I can now understand the amount of work that goes behind each painting.

Attention to details is amazing. You'll find out that all the background art are well researched and tediously put together. Some scenes are the results of several photo references used together, while some others are painted over photos while taking into account the colour scheme. There's research done on design of trains, vending machines, LED lights on signboards, routes of the trains so that they can be accurately portrayed in drawing. To draw Akari's homemade lunch, the staff actually cooked and packed the meal, then photographed it for use as reference. All those tiny words on fare charts, open pages of books are actually all hand drawn in. Environment scenes painted with photo reference take into account the seasons and colour of the air.

There's something about Japanese anime art that makes them look so fine. The level of detail in the background really makes a huge difference to the visual aesthetics. Every piece of art in this book is perfectly composed, and colour scheme carefully chosen. It's just awe-inspiring to see how many pieces of art there are to come out from the films. It's not all from Makoto Shinkai as there are other artists involved as well, many are interviewed at the back of the book. There's also a section that talks about how the scenes are created for animation.

I highly recommend this book for its stunning art.

Beautiful

Makoto Shinkai's art book " a sky longing for memories" is book is a faithful reproduction of the Japanese edition (minus dust jacket and wrap sleeve) in English. The book is filled with stills and background art from Shinkai's films. The book is full color with lots of images and provides tidbits of information on the techniques used to create the color drenched settings that have become Shinkai's signature.

Most of the text in the book is strictly information documenting the scene a image was used. The back section of book includes an artist "how to" describing Shinkai's work process and materials/technology he used. There is also an essay and interview to bring the book to a close.

Scale is too small

I really love Makoto Shinkai backgrounds, colors, details and everything.

It is a good book... but scrolling through pages made me feel like I want to see each picture in a bigger scale, I feel like I need to zoom-in, but I can't (at least full page for each image or larger scale for the whole book would be good).
It is more of a collection of background thumbnails, or pieces that scaled down to that size, than art-book to appreciate every piece of his amazing art. Quite a disappointment for me personally.

Good things, that paper is good. Also, they have part in a book where they talk about techniques of creating these kind of backgrounds. Very nice.

About the Author

Charles W. L. Hill is the Hughes M. Blake Professor of International Business at the School of Business, University of Washington. Professor Hill received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester’s Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in Britain. In addition to the University of Washington, he has served on the faculties of UMIST, Texas A&M University, and Michigan State University.
Professor Hill has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, and Organization Science. He has also published two college texts: one on strategic management and the other on international business. Professor Hill has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science. Between 1993 and 1996, he was consulting editor at the Academy of Management Review.
Professor Hill teaches in the MBA, Executive MBA, Management, and Ph.D. programs at the University of Washington. He has received awards for teaching excellence in the MBA, Executive MBA, and Management programs. He has also taught customized executive programs.
Professor Hill works on a consulting basis with a number of organizations. His clients have included ATL, Boeing, BF Goodrich, Hexcel, House of Fraser, Microsoft, Seattle City Light, Tacoma City Light, Thompson Financial Services, and Wizards of the Coast.

Misleading and low-quality.

I was pretty excited about picking up this cookbook, as I love my Instant Pot. It was low-priced, and advertised itself for two, and I was putting together an order and it 'fit' my budget, so I didn't read much about it after I saw it had good reviews.

When I received the cookbook, I was very disappointed. First, the quality of the book is poor. It's a basic paperback, and all of the recipes look like they were typed into Microsoft Word. There are no pictures, no discussions of the recipes. Just the name, the settings, the ingredients, and a very brief set of instructions.

In addition, the recipes are NOT for two people. A Pot Roast recipe that calls for a 3-lb roast? A rib recipe that calls for 5 pounds of baby back ribs? A 4-lb pork butt for pulled pork? No, these are just normal recipes, with no scaling to be for two at all.

And a final insult, the Sesame Chicken on the cover of the cookbook isn't even a recipe in the book itself!

You would do better looking up recipes online, this cookbook is barely functional and very misleading.

I would not recommend buying this book

I eagerly ordered this cook as scaling recipes down to two is at times challenging. I received the book yesterday. I found that all the recipes are for more than two, most for four but some for 6 or more. What's with the misleading book title? Then the cover looked interesting but not to be found in the book. Another misleading aspect. Finally some of the recipies are missing steps. I would not recommend buying this book

It's okay, and probably has some great recipes, but I am certainly disappointed. I was hoping for recipes for 2 people, like it states in the book title. Every recipe in here is for 4 or more servings.

Flame burns brightly

The moment I picked up FINDING FLAME, I was unable to put it down. I thought this book was an excellent addition to the House of Xannon series. We are introduced to Macari, a young daemon who finds herself in several predicaments, but is able to stay strong and focus on the one thing she was set out to find—an answer. Author Melinda VanLone has created such unique characters that become so closely involved with each other that at times, you don’t know who to trust. The story continuously builds, chapter after chapter, and when it’s all said and done, you can’t wait for the next book to be written, which I hope is very soon.

Review of Finding Flame

This is the second book in the House of Xannon series. Keeping with the uniqueness and very different storyline, this author keeps things interesting and lively. Macari walks the wind which sounds very interesting and scary all at the same time, being able to glimpse into the past to see how something unfolds but not all of the story would be exhilarating and infuriating all wrapped up into one. Macari and Tarian aren't very different in their determination, compassion, and curiosity for everything around them. I do have to say I think the ancients have something big planned for everyone involved.

Absolutely awesome!

I ran across this author in a set of books for .99 cents off of amazon kindle. She impressed me so much with the first book STRONGER Than Magic, that I had to red the next one.... Finding Flame starts off in a different place but eventually makes its way back to the original main characters to round off an excellently written story. I started reading it this morning an could not put it down. Now I am off to dinner while I look for the next book in this series. I wholeheartedly recommend this series.

An excellant work on political economics

Robert Gilpin's work is excellent addition to the study of political economics, albeit one that is starting to show its age 20 years after being written. This notwithstanding, the theoretical components of the book are mostly still valid and have been built upon by Gilpin in further works. As a matter of historical record and of economic history, it makes fascinating reading and it is especially interesting to consider the author's speculation as to the future of American hegemony prior to the fall of the Soviet Union. Obviously many of the authors fears were ill-founded, but it is interesting to note how different it could have all been. Additionally, many of the examples used, primarily dealing with the economic ascendancy of Japan, could today almost be replaced with China. It will be interesting to see whether this time it is the end of US hegemony or whether history will repeat itself.

Overall well worth the read.

Thorough scholarship and somewhat prescient

This is an extremely pertinent book for the next millenium. It is also quite popular in policy circles inside the Beltway. It is an indeispensible text for all Americans concerned with the future of international trade and the ongoing pathologies of our current trade regimes and the power relations they sustain to the detriment of the vast majority of human beings and the planet. It is thorough and scholarly throughout. While it is best read with a cup of Joe on a rainy day, it is worth the time and pays rereading many times over in light of current events. It's only shortcoming is it's neglect of the ecological dimensions of international trade and politics, nevertheless, it is a book for all who care about the human future.
