A book for understanding frontiers in new media research

In book "Frontiers in New Media Research", edited by Francis L.F. Lee, Louis Leung, Jack Linchuan Qiu and Donna S.C. Chu, different scholars explore implications of emerging media and social media on society in general and young citizens in particular. The book is divided into three parts, namely, p.1: Techno-Social Formations, p.2: Recurring Issues, and p.3: Emerging Media. It includes sixteen chapters. I found three chapters are very fascinating which describe social media as socio-political engagement. These chapters are namely: (3). The Internet and Democratic Accountability: The Rise of the Fifth Estate, (9). The Emerging Ecology of Online News and (13) The Internet in Flux: Twitter and the Interpretative Flexibility of Microblogging. This book is ideal for scholars in media studies, information studies and communication research. However, I found this book is very costly and less affordable to individual scholars.

An interesting sequel

"The Green Eyed Mage" is the sequel to Laurel Mojica's novel "The Bronze Mage".
A spell gone awry is forcing Princess Tabitha to be near the powerful mage James. If she's seperated from him for too long, the spell will eventually kill her. So Tabitha is forced to marry him. Secretly she's loved James for a long time but can't be sure if he feel the same.
James is the court mage for a neighboring country Xentia, and the inclusion of several powerful noblemen in the Xentian court have made it a prime target for the power hungry Empire. So when someone tries to kill Tabitha, James and her must discover if an Empire agent of one of the many personal enemies James has managed to collect for himself.
Much of the book is spent unraveling this mystery. I have to say, I liked "The Bronze Mage" but "The Green Eyed Mage" was a better book. It was fast paced, enjoyable, and a good fantasy novel and a good mystery.
I did not, by the middle of the book, care for the romance. I think that Tabitha was too insistent on dismissing James feeling for her, despite the countless pieces of evidence that proved again and again, that he cared for her. I expect some melodrama in a book but it was getting frustrating how thicked headed she was being. I mean "actions speak louder than words". She seemed to insist on him saying the words "I Love You" and she was going to leave him if he didn't. That's just...incredibly stupid.
The book seemed to lose something the last few pages. Laurel Mojica writes a good book but both this ending, and the ending to "The Bronze Mage", felt abrupt, like their were a few pages missing or something. I think that this ending could have, and should have been better, give how long we waited to see Tabitha's happily ever after.
Also we never found out what happened to the main villains. They were mentioned, then all of them disappeared. I hated that! I wanted a nice, neat, tidy, ending, and I didn't get it. I was still left hanging. Is she planning a sequel or something?
It was a good book and I enjoyed reading it but that I felt the ending hurt it.

The Green-Eyed Mage

It is fun to read a book about a girl who no-one thinks is beautiful; has no special gifts; and while she admittedly is a princess, is trying to find her grown-up self as a young bride in a complicated marriage. The plot line deals with court intrigue, magic spells and wizards, but Tabitha is ultimately a young woman who literally fights to be loved and recognized for herself. I found this second book to be even better written than the first, "The Bronze Mage". And, a big plus for me, a former librarian and high school teacher, is that this series continues to be the kind that I am comfortable recommending to my friends of every age. I hope that Laurel will continue writing this saga so that we can continue in Tabitha's world .

I'm not going to post spoilers here but this issue provides a very different perspective on everything you knew or thought you knew about the walking dead. Where did the virus come from, was Martinez really going to betray the group at the prison and more will be revealed (or at least one version of answers to these)

Must read this compelling book!!

Pulitzer Prize winning Journalist/Author Edward Humes ascribes the name eco baron to the innovative conservationists/ environmentalists striving to save the earth. The opposite of the former robber barons, they are having a positive impact on saving the natural environment instead of merely accumulating wealth and power. Mr. Humes shares the inspiring stories of devoted men and women committed to being the protectors of the planet, thereby ensuring a better future for all the earth's inhabitants. These little-known white knights have dedicated their entire lives and fortunes to this cause. They all valiantly fought against insurmountable obstacles and overwhelming opposition. One example is Doug Tompkins, who used his Esprit fashion company profits to buy and preserve thousands of rainforest acres in Chile's Patagonia. Also, described are the fascinating history and monumental accomplishments of the non-profit Center for Biological Diversity, including their plan to fight climate change. Roxanne Quimby sold her cosmetics company, Burt's Bees, and used the proceeds to save the Maine Woods. Volunteer Carole Allen advocated and saved a species of endangered sea turtle. These are just a sampling of the individuals profiled. Also included, is a list of simple things that every household can accomplish to save both money and the environment. The book concludes with an appendix of resources to assist in further educating oneself. Mr. Humes has magnificently written an engrossing book that had me eagerly turning the pages. Fascinating book. So much environmental literature can be depressing but this is an inspiring account of men and women who are making very real steps towards bettering the planet. Not only is the book well written, interesting and hopeful, but it helps the reader by providing real steps anyone can take to become an eco baron.

Two books in One- Eco philanthrophist and tech visionaries

While this book profiles the 'Conservancy' style of Roxanne Quimby (Burts Bees) and Doug Thompkins (Patagonia), what especially stuck with me was learning more about Andy Franks, a big mover behind the electric car/California Car project. Humes also has an excellent summary of how our freeway/road system was a gift to the auto industry at the expense of the electric trolleys, etc, that were once a common feature of American Cities.
In the long run, while conservation is crucial, praiseworthy, etc, in the long run what this country needs now is futurist and opinion makers who can reshape society into a healthy place for children and for those of a collaborative spirit. The idea of milking 'the commons' for all it's worth ala Bernie Madoff, Kenneth Lay...has got to stop. Humes does an excellent job of putting a positive spin on these changes.

Excellent Information and Point of View

Okay, so I do think this book needs to be revised for 2002, as it is a few years old and times have changed (mostly regarding funding and approaches), but as for a book of basic principles I was extremely impressed. Being a new-comer to the industry this book covers many aspects of operating a bar that a business owner should know, or at least pay attention to. If more people ran their bars utilizing some of the points in this book there would be better places to go and work... which is okay for me since no one in my town seems to know how to run a real bar/lounge...
