Great workbook for teaching kids ESL

I bought 3 different workbooks to use with ESL kids ages 10-14 and this is by far my favorite. It has tons of pictures and is especially easy to use interactively. What's more, sometimes it can be hilarious! I don't know if the humor is intentional but lots of times I find myself cracking up in front of the students at something in the book. Example: There's a picture of two raggedy men sitting on a bench with a makeshift fire and a sign behind them that says CITY PARK. Question: "Are they businessmen?" Answer: "No, they aren't. They're bums!" Laughed a good 3 minutes on that one.

So I don't know about everything being terribly appropriate, but I love this workbook and the kids definitely show more enthusiasm than with the other books. It's very intuitive, fun and interesting. The downside is that it's a tad pricey, actually maybe more than a tad (triple the price of the other workbooks in fact!). Still, if you're looking for something to teach kids basic English, I recommend this workbook as the best option you'll be able to find in Barnes & Nobles or Borders.

This book is a great workbook and a textbook that can be used for the ESL beginners. I learned English from it when I came to the USA. It covers basic tenses, numbers, includes nice stories and dialogues. I would recommend it to everyone!!!

Cute Book for Young Girls

My ten-year-old daughter loves this series of books. Her reading lexile is 924, so she flies through these books in a matter of days, but she loves the characters and story lines. She also has learned a few cultural/historical facts as she reads these fun fiction books.

Good Book. I recommend for ages 7-12

I like this book because it is very interesting. I used to wonder if people could walk on clouds and this book has got me wondering again. Airavata-the elephant with seven trunks each a different colour of the rainbow-has some very inspirational words for the Thea Sisters about believing in your deepest wishes and most secret dreams. The Wind Elves speak with math riddles , The Scarlet Lightening Fairies are always very angry and hate people but trade if they desperately need to , Ariette-a Weaver Fairy-is very kind and compassionate but throughout most of the story she is sad , The Hundred Handed Giant is quite friendly but is cursed to always keep his hands busy or he will die , The Colour Pixies are friendly if you can make them laugh-they get their name because they are the ones who paint the clouds , Queen Nephele is quite nice but is sometimes judgemental , Galatea is probably the kindest fairy in the story because she risks all her powers for her best friend , Sleep Fairies are sweet but are not much help , The Songwing is a bird with golden wings and he is the cause of most of the story's trouble-He is also very stubborn.I recommend this to any girls age 7-12. You will enjoy this book

Do you want to find the extraordinary amongst the ordinary of your life?

As I read "Wizards, Wardrobes and Wookies", I really enjoyed how Connie contrasted all of the extraordinary events of Harry Potter (and the other wonderful fantasy stories I had enjoyed) against biblical events and our own "ordinary" lives. I was struck by the implications -- where does "ordinary" end and "extraordinary" begin? When opportunities show up in our lives do we have the courage to face our fears and "cross the threshold" and voyage out into the unknown? Connie provides a fun exploration into the world of the hero and their adventures to inspire us and to help open our eyes to the magic that can be found in our own lives. She also has some good tips on how to negotiate our way along difficult paths and how to prepare and arm ourselves for battle.

***** No one will be surprised to see a book praising the merits of C.S. Lewis' beloved Narnia series to Christians. However, suggesting that Christians can and some have already found echoes of their faith and lessons in, of all things, Star Wars and Harry Potter will probably scandalize as many people as it delights. Ignore those crying "heresy" and give this book a hearing. Ms. Neal brings out a wealth of Christian insights gleaned not only from Narnia, but also from that galaxy long ago and far away and from Hogwarts. In fact, I daresay she finds more to glean from the two strictly secular series than from the conventionally Christian one. The introduction to this tome is enough to reassure parents about the merits of reading or watching such things, but reading the entire volume will enhance your enjoyment of all three sagas. *****

Inspiring

This is an interesting book that brings together Star Wars, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Harry Potter in order to talk about the Bible and the hero journey in our own lives. I was definitely skeptical going into it because so much as already been said about Harry Potter and the hero's journey as well as Harry Potter and Christianity. (I know the same is true for Star Wars and Narnia as well but I haven't personally read anything like that about these works before). However I think that this book has a very good take on the subject.
There are a few things that bothered me a bit about this book. The first is that there are a few times when the author compares being a Democrat to being evil. Now, I certainly think that there are plenty of relevant topics if you want to compare these works to politics. But the author states that not believing in the non-existent weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and not believing that Voldemort had returned to power are the same and that that implies that those who didn't think we should have gone to war in Iraq are sinners. That argument doesn't follow.
There are also quite a few inaccuracies in the book. There are many little things I noticed about Harry Potter specifically, but as I know more details to Harry Potter than the average person, I was able to over look most of these since they didn't take away from the message of the work. There were some time-related discrepancies that did bother me. For example, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets can't be a reflection of life after September 11, 2001 because it was published well before then.
Having said all that, I think this book did a very good job of making the Bible more exciting and interesting by relating it well to pop culture. And as this is the main aim of the book, I would say that overall this book is a great success.

This is a great anthology. The best you are going to find unless you go with one of the giant anthologies. This one is cheaper and definitely less heavy than, lets say Norton's anthology. And because it is a 'pocket anthology' it cuts out the weaker poems making this a strong group of poems.

Good book, Needed for School, but be ready for a headache.

This book is full of great authors and amazing works of poetry. I had to purchase it for class, and the only real complaint I have is a MAJOR one (Academically). The index at the front of the book does not seem to be in any real chronological or alphabetical order. When my teacher would tell me to read Rita Dove's poem, it would literally take me ten minutes to find where she was in the massive index of poets.

Other than that, great book, worth the money (for school, for recreational use: there is probably better)
